Premier Division
With the new surge of Covid, Vacancies and Hall non availability, the Premier Division had just 1 match to Report on in Week 7. This saw the Irons B gain a 9-0 victory over Hockley A. Irons’ Captain, Paul Brown, had the closest matches, beating both Dan Patynski and Dave Chenery in 5 sets and Dave Colwill in 4. Great to see Andy Halling playing again, winning his 3 and only dropping 1 set to Dan Patynski. Finally, Norbert Fullerton proved far too strong winning his 3 matches in straight sets.

Division 1
Just one postponement to report in the final week before the Christmas and New Year break. The fixture between Rawreth C and Hadleigh Forum B had to be called off as the venue was not available.
Elsewhere, Lentern B took their big hitters for their visit to Hadleigh Forum C. Gus Heath produced another unbeaten POM performance and both Ian Cranstone and Wayne Farmer chipped in with two wins apiece in an easy 7 – 2 away win. Paul Farwell was responsible for both the home teams successes.
Hockley derbies seem alwa6ys to be close affairs, and this week was no exception. Hockley B just edged it 5 – 4 against their Hockley D team. No one player was unbeaten. The POM was Dave Chenery with two wins. This feat was matched by team mate Keith Abbott, with Josh Copeland winning one. Oliver George and Aaryan Vatsa each got two for the unlucky D side.
Not for the first time this season, Canvey A only required two players to win a match. Due to one of their players being taken unwell at the commencement of the fixture, only Ray Wilson and Terry Giddens played in their home game against Hockley C. However, with maximums from both of them, they were comfortable 6 – 3 winners. Brian Bissenden was the visitor’s best performer.
Not to be outdone, Stanford Le Hope A could also only muster two players for their home game against Rawreth D. However, this, too, was not a handicap to success. Hat tricks from both POM Peter Weatherall and Russell Bright gave them a 6 – 3 win over the youthful visitors.
The young Ashingdon team visited Invicta A, but came away with only one success, despite some very fine table tennis. Alex Bowden scored the visitor’s only success in an 8 – 1 defeat. Both Invicta’s Alan Strawford and POM John Blackman were unbeaten, whilst David Barnes won two.
The contest between Mapledene and visitors Brand Identity Bwas a very close affair. There were several close rubbers, but only one went to five sets. The match was only decided in the final clash when David Jacob overcame Mapledene’s Lin Roff to give his side a 5 – 4 away victory. Simon Jacob was the POM for the visitors, being unbeaten. David got the other two. For Mapledene, Mike Johnston won two and Lin and Andy Seaman one each.

Division 2
With two of the top four teams out of action this week the top of the Division 2 table looks slightly different with Stanford B moving up into second place. As a result, leaders Wakering are 10 points clear and chalked up their fourth whitewash of the season as they beat Invicta C 9-0.
One of the best matches of the week turned out to be Invicta C’s other match against their own Invicta B team. As you might have expected it was nip and tuck all evening going down to the final game with POTM Trisha Winter just edging out David Barnes in five sets, one of five matches that went the distance on the night. Keith Baxter provided the backup to Trisha winning twice in five sets after being 2-1 down in both whilst David got a double for the B team with one each for Mike Keeble and Sarah Ball. Brendan Raja missed out for the C team.
Wakering’s win came courtesy of Zac and Paul England and Stuart Mills eclipsing a slightly changed Invicta C line up of John Golding, Keith Baxter and Jon Gould. Wakering only dropped three sets all night.
Stanford B’s move up the table came despite a 6-3 defeat at the hands of Hadleigh Forum D. At one stage they found themselves 5-0 down but a late rally made the score respectable. David Thomas was the man in form for Forum claiming three wins and he was supported by a double from Tony Mace and one from Jean Catley. Peter Moxham did well to win in five sets coming back from 2-0 down against Jean whilst John Handscombe got two for Stanford including a hard fought five set win against Tony.
Invicta B enjoyed a better result in their second game of the week winning 7-2 at Hockley F. Trisha Winter picked up another POTM, albeit for the B team this time, whilst Mike Keeble and Sarah Ball both won two games. The resistance from Hockley came in the shape of David Cross who also won two.
Customs were just edged out 5-4 against Canvey C but the four points were enough to lift them off the bottom of the table for the first time since the first week of the season pushing Hockley F down in their place. Richard Kidd and Amar Al-Soufi both picked up braces, but no one could get near Tony Westwell who did not drop a set all night. Ray Baker and Steve Parker both beat Breda Kidd. Canvey stay in fifth place.
Another 5-4 result in the match between Stanford C and D teams with the C team just earning the bragging rights. Steve King was POTM supported by a win each for Peter Moxham and Dave Arnett whilst Randy Santiago and Mark Downey shared the points for the D team. Surprisingly only one match went to five sets which saw the D team’s James Parker beaten 11/6 in the fifth by Dave after being 2-0 down.
