RAWRETH A - THORPE BAY A MATCH REPORT

Well I said last week it was going to be a great end to the season and the players of Rawreth A and Thorpe Bay A didn’t let me down. As you will recall Rawreth A had to win 6-3 or better to win the title with any other result meaning Thorpe Bay A would take the spoils and after some great matches Rawreth found themselves 5-3 up with one match to play…..

Now with 2 additional reports from David Barnes - Division 2, for weeks 31 & 33

First this week a result from last week and it was from the Warehouse Derby. Warehouse A overcame their B team 6-3 thanks to two wins a piece for Berti Makolli, Kim Shead and Martin Turner. Mark Rudland and Harry Small combined for the three wins for the defeated side.

Hullbridge 1 retained their National Junior League division 1 title with a comprehensive display in the final round of matches held in Stowmarket.

A narrow victory for Hockley A to kick us off this week as Chris Ballard’s three wins led them to a 5-4 win over Rawreth B for whom Tim Cramphorn and Babul McLeod both won two matches each. A second game that went down to the wire was Rayleigh Mill’s 5-4 win over Hullbridge C

Thorpe Bay A announced that they are very much up for retaining their title this year as they beat third place Hullbridge A 9-0.

There was a close game involving teams at different ends of the table this week as Hullbridge A overcame an impressive effort from Warehouse A 5-4. Dave Bowles was the man of the match as he won his three for Hullbridge while there were two wins a piece for Kim Shead and Martin Turner over Reece Seddon and Richard Brown.

Keith Adams was in fine form as he warmed up for the Basildon Closed with three wins for Hullbridge B against their A side. Reece Seddon, Richard Brown and Dave Bowles all winning two games to lead to a 6-3 win for Hullbridge A.

Hullbridge A recorded an 8-1 win over Rayleigh Mill this week and that impressive scoreline was helped by two games that went right down to the wire in the 5th end. First Stuart Gibbs came out on top in a great battle with County 060s team mate Peter Radford and then Steve Maltby nearly caused an upset by taking Gibbs all the way to deuce in the 5th and even having one match point. Richard Brown won 2, just losing to Radford while Reece Seddon was in good form winning all his games.

Youngsters from across Southend have been involved in the last three rounds of Eastern Region National Junior and National Cadet League.

First this week was a mid-table clash between 2 teams striving for 5th place in the table who on paper seemed evenly matched. At the end of the evening Hullbridge B beat Rawreth B 7-2. With 7 of the 9 matches finishing 3-0 it was a comfortable win for the Hullbridge team.

It seems we have a two-horse race at the top of the Premier division with just two points separating Rawreth A and Thorpe Bay A. This week gave no further indication on the destination of the title as both sides recorded convincing 9-0 wins over Brand Identity A and Warehouse A respectively.

Kevin Read was in imperious form winning his 3 for Rawreth A which included a tremendous match with Matt Spero, eventually winning 11-9 in the 5th. He therefore, quite rightly, walks away with the MoM award. Matt picked up 2 wins for the 'B' team and in doing so beat Minda Sinkus (also 11-9 in the 5th !) and Steve Tilson 3 sets to 1.

Another big margin of victory, 8-1 this time, was recorded by Thorpe Bay B over Hockley A. Liam Squirrell and Kieran Skeggs going unbeaten and Gurj Bhambra only being denied his hattrick by Chris Ballard.

We start with a close match between the two top sides in the division that ended 5-4 to Rawreth A. The pivotal game of the evening was between the outstanding players on each side, James Denyer for Thorpe Bay and Steve Tilson (pictured below) for Rawreth. Denyer had several match points in the 5th game but Steve fought back to win 12-10. Then with the match tied at 4-4 Tilson beat Paul Sayer in 4 games to win the match and collect his hat trick.
