Divisional Championships 2016

Division 1 (11th February)

Unfortunately the turnout for the Division 1 championships was somewhat disappointing. With fewer teams, and a combination of work commitments and current injuries, the championship struggled to attract players. In the end, a Stamford School duo played the final of the singles, and, on this occasion, it was the pupil who was victorious over the master with Rutwik Zapake defeating Richard Henry 11-7, 10,12, 11-7, 11-7

Division 2 (18th February)

The Division 2 competitions were particularly competitive, with one or two surprises occurring.

The singles competition began proceedings with players being divided into three round-robin groups. Two seeded players, Stephen Smith and Joe Orford, are yet to be beaten in league matches this season, and were favourites to compete the final. However, Stephen lost two of his group matches to miss out on a semi-final place. Ironically, he beat Stuart Wills who qualified as this group’s winner. Joe Orford progressed without alarm and joined the third group winner, Nick McDowall, and best runner-up, Vic Hoffman, in the semi-finals.

Joe maintained his good form to beat Stuart 11-3, 11-6, and Nick McDowall beat Vic Hoffman 11-9, 11-9 in a closer encounter. The final was remarkable for the retrieval skills shown by both players, and, after a slow start, it was Nick who became the delighted champion. The 4-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-9 result reflects the tough nature of the match.

Nick became a double-champion on the evening as he joined Stuart Wills for the doubles final. With Vic Hoffman and John Chambers beating the favourites Joe Orford and Stephen Smith, an intriguing final was in prospect. The duo from Bourne and Tallington proved too determined, however, and ran out 11-7, 11-4, 11-9 victors.
