SRTTL Junior Tournament 2016

Junior Tournament 2016

There was a pleasing turnout of young table tennis players at a tournament recently held at Stamford School. Players coached at Peterborough, Tallington and Northborough joined boys from the Endowed Schools in two divisions of competition. For a number it was the first experience of competition and there was a healthy balance of challenge and enjoyment for the players whose ages ranged between 10 and 18.

Stamford School currently top Division 1 of the Stamford and Rutland Table Tennis League, but the strongest players were placed in different teams to ensure closeness of matches. The ‘A’ Division was eventually won by the pairing of Ryan Chung and Matthew Smith; runners-up were Rutwik Zapake and Matthew Hardiment. The final singles match between School team players Ryan and Rutwik was high quality. It was won by Rutwik, thus providing him with some individual consolation.

The ‘B’ Division contained the less experienced players, and was won by the pairing of Jamie Anderson and Uday Khunti. Here there was the biggest age difference as Jamie is a Y5 pupil at SJS, while Uday is in Y13 at the boys’ school. Runners-up were Max Mullins and his younger brother Ollie, who recovered well after losing their first match.

Tournament organiser Richard Henry was pleased with the sportsmanship displayed by the youngsters: “Although some players were clearly more experienced than others, every game was played keenly and in good spirit. The scorecards were always closely scrutinised by the teams at the end of each match.”
