Week 5

 

Eaglescliffe A halted Northfield Advanced title charge with a resounding 7-3 win. Advanced, confident after a comprehensive 8-2 win against Eaglescliffe B the previous week, were outplayed for most of the evening. Both teams made changes but Northfield’s trio of Dave Ashwell, Jack Cope & Carl White could only manage 1 win each, all beating Chris Johns, Johns taking Cope to 5, but losing a lead in the 5thto snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Geoff Salter’s combination of attack and defence paid dividends with 3 fine wins, most notably a fantastic win over cope 3-1 after dropping the 1stend. Man of the match Tom Rayner, who is playing in the Portuguese Cadet Open next weekend, played his first game for Eaglescliffe and won all his games 3 straight. The best of which was against practice partner Cope, winning 5,8 & 8. Rayner & Salter combined to an easy doubles victory over Cope & White to complete the win. 

 

Also at Northfield, Patriots hosted Belatrojo with the home side claiming a narrow 6-4 win. Belatrojo, playing only their 2ndmatch of the season fielded fantastic new talent in Troy Madison & Ben Savage, Savage  recording 2 impressive wins over Jimmy Scope and Lindsay Taylor. But man of the Match was another star of the future, Benjamin Piggott winning  all his matches in a fine display of attacking table tennis. Only Crawford taking an end in an otherwise flawless performance. 

 

Hartlepool Westbourne earned their first points of the season with Phil Webster having a fine night winning 2 but it wasn’t enough as the Meercats ran out 7-3 winners, Karl Shaw proving tricky as ever winning his 3. 

 

In Division 2 Hartlepool Westbourne C kept pressure on the front runners with an excellent 9-1 win over Bishop Auckland Braves, John Harper having a fine night with his 3 wins. Eaglescliffe C capitalized on a slip by their neighbours Eaglescliffe D with a 8-2 win over the Hippos, Bob Evans, proving he’s still worthy of selection, winning his 3 comfortably. Eaglescliffe D could only manage a 5 all draw with Real Sosobad, Steve Burge staring and gaining the man of the match award. Elsewhere, Stockton Cricket Club had a comfortable win over Wanderers Peoples Centre with John Bousfield showing his class. Tommy Webster, another classy division 2 player, claimed another MOTM award in a fine 7-3 win over Hartlepool Westbourne B, Andy Greason, Westbourne’s best player on the night fighting hard with an excellent win over Dave Drummond 12-10 in the 5th.
