Northfield Patriots moved up to second in the Stockton & District Table Tennis League Division 1 after an impressive 7-3 win over Eaglescliffe B with only 2 men. Benjamin Piggott, who, like other young talented players in the league is competing in the Portuguese Junior & Cadet open this week was man of the match. Piggott beat Martin Rutter comprehensively, 7, 2 & 5, Alex Garlick fared slightly better loosing 7,8 & 9. However it was Danny Welsh who pushed Piggott the furthest, after sharing the first two games Piggott narrowly pinched the next two 11 & 10. Lindsay Taylor beat both Welsh & Garlick 3 straight but had a titanic battle with a much improved performance from Rutter but that still wasn’t enough with Taylor winning the last 2 games 5 & 8 to take the win. Taylor & Piggott beat Rutter & Garlick to complete the victory. Northfield Belatrojo claimed their first win of the season with fine nights work beating Hartlepool Westboure A 9-1. Only Peter Able stopped the whitewash with a win over Robert Lawson. John Crawford was MOTM but was forced to work hard especially by Craig Dring. Elsewhere, Northfield Advanced had a routine win over Northfield Pingers, however Tony Langley fought well to take a 2-1 lead over Jack Cope but Cope still prevailed taking the last 2 games 6 & 9 to disappoint Langley. Jevon Chan, in a match-up that has been going on since the 80’s also took 5 ends to be victorious over the big looping Pete Sermon.
