Northfield Advanced maintained their lead at the top of the Stockton & District Table Tennis League Division 1 with a resounding but hard fought 9-1 win over Northfield Meerkats. Carl White was top man on the night with 3 comfortable wins especially against Mick Young, outwitting the normally attacking Young with his combination bat. Young, however redeemed himself with a fantastic win over Jevon Chan in 4 ends, slightly denting Chan’s precious win average. Dave Ashwell also had a good night but was pushed all the way by the dogged style of Kevin Linsley. Northfield Patriots tried to keep the pace with Advanced but fielded an understrength side with Dave Drummond stepping up from the second division. Mark Simon won his 3 in comfortable style as usual, as did Benjamin Piggott but Drummond just missed out on his first division 1 wins for a couple of years but must have been happy with his performance. At Eaglescliffe Village Hall both A & B teams took on Hartlepool Westbourne & Belatrojo respectfully. The A team running out 8-2 winners, Tom Rayner & Chris Johns secured their 3 on the night but Luke Bradburn found things a little tougher loosing to Peter Able and having a titanic battle with Phil Webster. Bradburn took a 2-1 lead but Webster won a fine 4thend 12-10 to take in into a decider. Webster then went 10-4 up in the 5thbefore Bradburn staged the comeback of the season so far taking the next 8 points to take a most unexpected win. The B team crept 1 point above their neighbours with a 7-3 win. Anthony Phoenix showing his class in his 3 wins.
In Division 2 Hartlepool Westbourne B maintained their top spot on the festive Tree with a 9-1 win over 2 man Eaglescliffe D. Richard Chamberlain fighting hard for their only win on the night over Jason Lloyd. Northfield Steelers, hot on heels of Westbourne, maintained their 100% win record with a 10-0 win over Northfield Sosobad, Tommy Webster again proving too much of a match for all comers this season, maintained his own 100% record as we approach halfway in the season. Dave Drummond could have pinched the MOTM award with his 3 fine wins. Eaglescliffe C & Northfield Hippos had comfortable wins over Bishop Auckland Braves & Wanderers respectfully. Most competitive match of the week was between Hartlepool Westbourne C & Stockton Cricket Club. John Harper got the home team off to a great start with hard fought win over the equally experienced Peter Philips winning 11-8 in the 5th. Roy Horseman then overcame the monumental talents of Paul Scrafton, again winning 11-8 in the 5thafter Scrafton lead 2-1. John Bousfield then settled the Cricket Club’s nerves with his first of 3 wins on a MOTM night for the talented (relative) youngster. Scrafton suffered a groundhog day moment as he again was 2-1 up only to lose in the 5thend to John Harper. Scrafton suffered a groundhog day moment as he again was 2-1 up only to lose in the 5thend to John Harper. Bousfield & Philips won their last singles matches and combined to win the doubles to turn a 4-3 deficit into a fine 6-4 away win.
