Stratford Herald Week Beginning October 23rd

When they visited Henley A Veterans were represented by octogenarians George Mudie, Peter Rodwell, and Brian Marston, with a combined age of 245, thus undoubtedly becoming the oldest trio to have played in the Stratford league. The three singles games they won were all achieved over five sets, proving that the advancing years have not detracted from their fitness. Marston went the full distance before gaining victory over both Geoff Shephard and Dave Hatcher, with the latter also losing in the decider to Mudie. Marston and Rodwell earned Veterans’ fourth point with success in the doubles. However it wasn’t quite enough to claim the honours as Peter Quince marked his return to form with a treble for the hosts, while Shephard added brace and Hatcher their crucial sixth point.

An unbeaten performance from Nello Mauri provided the backbone to Blazing Paddles 8-2 win at FISSC. However, in a 25 minute opener which went the full distance, he was made to work hard by Mark Jones, and then, in another hard fought game, he was twice taken to deuce by Peter Florence. Jones was subsequently involved in the only other clash to go to the wire, letting slip a two set lead against Dave Fordham before finally coming good, and earned the farmers' other score by defeating Harry Azima.

Mauri was still feeling the effects of his exertions the following evening when Paddles entertained Shottery A and were on the receiving end of a  whitewash. He took early leads against Stephen Foster and Gary Stewart without being able to press home the advantages, and then lost out to Graham Poole as all three Shottery players went on to record unbeaten performances.

Also undefeated were JLM Falcons duo of Stef Mytton and Steve Cull which enabled them to overcome Ashorne 7-3 where Steve Bolton, Roger Pye and Jim Jack all earning a point for the villagers.

Tanworth Taipans teenager Ben Rycroft-Stanley notched a brace, before winning the doubles in partnership with Mick Welsh, when they entertained Colebridge Pasties but that was all his team were able to muster. Rycroft-Stanley  was denied a clean sweep by Tom Shortley who recorded a treble for the visitors with Michael Klein and Mike Evetts each adding two successes although the latter was taken to a fifth set by Welsh.
