2017 Stroud Senior Tournament Report
The tournament was held on Sunday 21st Feb at Deer Park, with Finals night booked for Wednesday 5th April at the same venue. A total of 33 players took part, which was dramatically down on recent years (54 last year). All the events were run, although the divisional singles and ladies events had limited entries. Division 3 & 4 singles and Ladies singles were all run with a group stage to ensure everyone got plenty of table tennis.
In spite of the reduced entry, all the events were keenly contested, and the tournament ran all day from 9.00 to 5.00. Many thanks are due to Carol & Emily Philp and Jane Leigh on the day for their efficient organisation. Dave Adamson as usual managed to run an excellent refreshments stand as well as being one of the major tournament participants. Julien ran the raffle and collected £44 for charity - charity to be decided.
The Open singles was indeed wide open in the absence of last year’s winner Olly Tyndall. Top seed Anthony Kent had an untroubled run to the semi-finals, where he will play Stroud newcomer Bhargav Uday Chandra in an all Thornbury semi. The second semi-final is between two Phoenix players, also new to Finals night, Dave Hadley & Liwu Wei. Finals night promises some high quality table tennis, and a special mention to Dave Hadley and Abu Salehbhai in the Veterans, who played the last and arguably best match of the day in the Vets semi-final, Abu emerging the winner 22:20, yes 22:20 in the fifth.
The ladies doubles will be played on Finals night in place of the U18 Boys final.
