End Of Season Finals Night And Presentation Of Awards

The spectators and players alike were entertained by some super table tennis at the recent finals and presentation night played at Deer Park School. The evening is a culmination of a busy league season and the final matches from the Stroud closed competition.

Play commenced with the open singles semi-finals, the first was between Dave Hadley (Nailsworth Phoenix) and Lee Thomas (Woodchester), Dave won by three games to one. This was followed by a match between Abu Salebhai (Frampton) and Dave Reeves (Thornbury), Dave won three games to one to set up a final against Dave Hadley.

Next was the mixed doubles which was Isobella Khan & Dave Adamson vs Kim Selfe & Dave Hadley. Kim and Dave are the Mixed Doubles Champions.

Dave Reeves then beat Dave Hadley 3-1 to become the Veterans Champion.

The Ladies final between Kim Selfe and Isobella Khan which Isobella won 3-2 to become Ladies Champion.

The Open Doubles final was Ian Maggs/Dave Reeves vs Dave Hadley/Liwu Wei. With Dave and Li winning 3-1 to retain their Open Doubles title.

The last match of the evening and probably the best was between Dave Reeves and Dave Hadley for the open singles. Dave Reeves won a hard fought encounter 3/1 to become the Open Singles Champion.

Awards were then given for all the above matches and also junior, divisional and committee awards:

U11 open, winner Joseph Hadley (Nailsworth Phoenix), runner up Luke Sefton.

U13 boys, winner James Lillwall, runner up Luke Sefton.

U15 boys, winner George Thomas (Cam & Dursley), runner up Jon Ramsbotham (Nailsworth Phoenix).

U18 boys, winner Jon Ramsbotham, runner up Sam McIvor (both Nailsworth Phoenix).

U18 boys doubles, winners Sam McIvor & Jon Ramsbotham, runners up Tirian Jakes & Theo Laffort (Randwick).

 

Division 1 winners: Forest Green A, runners up: Woodchester A.

Division 2 winners: Randwick A, runners up: Thornbury B.

Division 3 winners: Randwick C, runners up: Nailsworth A.

Division 4 winners: Cam & Dursley B, runners up: Nailsworth Phoenix G.

 

Closed tournament award winners:

Division 2 winners: Jon Ramsbotham (Phoenix D), runner up: Chris Varley (Whiteshill vets B).

Division 3 winners: Barry Jordan (Whiteshill vets C), runner up: Theo Laffort (Randwick C).

The “Don Sweeney” shield is awarded to the player with the best league average having played at least 75% of fixtures. This was awarded to Alexander Curzon (Nailsworth Phoenix).

The “Andrew Golding” trophy is awarded to the most improved junior who was George Thomas (Cam & Dursley).

The “League Committee Award” was presented to Andy Hammond (Nailsworth Phoenix) for his service to table tennis.

The “Michael Holbrow” shield is awarded to the junior with the best league record and who only plays in the Stroud league. This was given to Joe Collins (Cam & Dursley).

The “Paul Bowcott” award is given to a league player who, by service to his club or league, has displayed true sportsmanship in promoting the image of table tennis in Stroud. This year it was awarded to Gary Worsfold (Thornbury).

The “Dave Hayward” award is given to the best junior in their first season of league play and this year it was jointly awarded to Thomas Hadley and Joseph Hadley (both Nailsworth Phoenix).
