John Ford Memorial Trophy

This took place today at Matravers School, Westbury.  This event is the 4 Wiltshire leagues competing, each comprising 4 players.  We were represented by James Lovelock and Ade Noke (both Buckland) as the senior and vet respectively, and Will Avery and Taisei Akiyama as the 2 juniors.

In the first round, West Wilts defeated Devizes 6-4.   Meanwhile, we played Salisbury.  With the outcome at 5-5, the match was decided on the result of the contest between the 2 seniors - unfortunately James lost in a close 5-setter to Nick Dibben.  That meant we then played against Devizes in the 3rd/4th place play-off.  We won that match 6-4.

West Wilts went on to beat Salisbury 8-2 in the final and therefore retain the trophy.  Yet again, they had a strong team, with Phil Marshall as the senior, Ali Pearson as the vet, Hazel Brown as the lady and Damian Hocquard-Drake as the junior.  It’s a great shame we didn’t quite pip Salisbury as our guys really fancied a go at West Wilts.

All the players enjoyed the day.  The format was much better this year - we played on 4 tables so it was a much sharper event and knocked a good couple of hours of the usual 6 hour day. The guys all played well, although I think James was a little disappointed with his form.  Taisei and Will played really well. Will was undefeated all day, including in the doubles (he partnered James).  He came back twice from 2-0 in the singles.  So well done to them all and great thanks to them for taking part.

Here’s to next year!
