A good performance by all 4 Stroud league teams

Another Stroud & District league season came to an end on Wednesday, with the playing of the Closed tournament finals.

We were well represented on the evening with 3 Thornbury players competing (Emily Standing, Anthony Kent and Bhargav Uday Chandra). Unfortunately, both Emily and Anthony were beaten in their respective singles finals but they did manage to pair up to win the Mixed Doubles title and Emily also formed part of the pair that won the Ladies Doubles.

On the day of the tournament, 2 other players came away with a title. Mark Attwood retained his Division 2 Singles crown and Craig Skeldon took the Division 3 event. Well done both!!

Onto the 4 league teams:

Thornbury A retained their Division One title, this year winning every match. Special congratulation go to Dave Reeves who also remained unbeaten all season. Great to welcome Bhargav to the team / club just before Christmas and we know that he will be a valuable asset next season. The squad consisted of Emily Standing, Anthony Kent, Bhargav Uday Chandra, Dave Reeves, Ian Maggs, Julian Elsbury and Len Vowles.

Thornbury B finished Runners-up to Randwick A in Division Two, only losing 2 matches in the process. This is a great result for the team that consists of Gavin Rogers, Mark Attwood and Simon Lewis.

Thornbury C finished 5th in Division Three, over 20 points clear of 6th place. This was a tough season for the team in terms of fielding a settled side but we are confident that they will come back and contest the division next season. The squad consisted of Tracy Dibble, Craig Skeldon, Graham Eden, Len Pattison, Stephen Biles and Viv Wilkie.

Thornbury D played their first ever season of competitive Table Tennis!! This in itself was a massive step up for those involved but they all played to the best of the their ability and will benefit when they meet the same opponents next season. It was great to see people that started off as social players taking the leap of faith to play in Division Four of a formal league. Well done to Christine Burrows, Mable Choularton, Alan Fisher, Gramps Taylor, Jeremy Nicholls, Peter Bird and Robert Gumbrell. We look forward to mapping your progress moving forward!
