Report on Glos Junior Closed TT Championships. Dec 1st 2018.
It was Cheltenham TT Association‘s turn to organise this event, which was played at Cheltenham YMCA Sports Centre.
There were 41 entries, and it was very pleasing to receive 11 entries from Dene Magna School , Cinderford, in Forest of Dean.
The Boys Under 18 singles was played in 6 groups , and 3 of the seeds, Sam Mcivor, George Thomas, and Alex Emms reached the semi final. The last place went to 5th seed Jon Ramsbotham , who beat 4th seed Tirian Jakes in a close game ,11/ 8, 11/9, 11/13, 11/7 .
In the semi finals Sam beat Jon 11/7, 4/11, 11/5, 11/7 , and Alex beat George 11/5, 11/8, 11/7 .
The final was an outstanding display of attacking TT by both players. Alex went 2 /1 up in games , and had match points to win the 4th game. But Sam finally won that game 12/10, and played even better to win the 5th 11/5. Well done to both players.
The Boys Under 15 Singles was played in 5 groups. 3 of the seeds , Tom Powlesland, Jon Ramsbotham, and Sam Mcivor reached the semi finals. The last place went to unseeded Dou-Dou Liu, who beat 4th seed Elliott Gregory 11/8, 11/5, 11/7.
In the semis Tom beat Jon in a close and thrilling match 11/9, 11/8, 2/11, 11/13, 11/3, and Sam beat Dou-Dou 11/6, 11/4, 11/3 .
The final between Tom and Sam could not have been a more dramatic and at times emotional. Sam lost the first game 9/11, won the 2nd 15/13, won the 3rd 11/ 4, and then just lost the 4th 17/15. Recovering his composure, he won the 5th 11/6. Outstanding display by both players.
The Boys Under 13 Singles was played in 3 groups, and the group winners , Tom Powlesland, Charlie Davidson and Jake Davidson won through to play off in the final group.
Tom was the clear winner over Charlie 11/5, 11/5, 11/3. This is Tom’s last year in the U13’s . Charlie has still 3 more years in the U13’s.
The Boys under 11 Singles was between Charlie Davidson, Jake Davidson, and James Agombar. Charlie won comfortably, Jake beat James to be runner up. However James did manage to score more points off Charlie than Jake.
Girls Singles. Only 4 girls entered , Anna Besarabova, Lydia Harris, Mareyam Smith, and Elise Davies. They played in one group , and contested both the Under 15 and the Under 18 singles, except Anna who is not U15. Anna comfortably won the U18 , and Lydia was runner up.
In the Under 15 singles Lydia ,Mareyam , and Elise each won one match , so games averages had to be considered. Elise won 4 , lost 5, Mareyam won 4, lost 4, and Lydia won 5 , and lost 4. By the margin of one game, the winner was Lydia, and Mareyam was runner up.
The standard of the top juniors was very high, and reflects great credit to Eddie Roofe, the County Coach.
The trophies were presented by Dave Harvey, Chairman Gloucestershire TTA.
The events were organised by Dave Harvey, Jon McGugan , Peter Cruwys, and Dave Metcalfe, with considerable umpiring assistance from Alan Thomas, and Annie Powlesland .
All equipment supplied by the Cheltenham TT Club.
