Gloucestershire Senior 2018 County Championships - Division 2B

County Seniors 2018

The Gloucestershire County Senior team this year included Stella Honey, Emily Philp, Olly Tyndall, Louis Price & Christoph Zickert. Playing in Division 2B the team travelled to Cippenham, Berkshire to play all 6 matches over one weekend. The first match started at 9.30am and the Gloucestershire players were off to a flying start winning the first 9 sets, before Wilts claimed a consolation set, giving Gloucestershire a 9-1 victory. Next up were Somerset and our Men were far too strong for them, taking all 6 mens sets available. Stella added another to make the 2nd win of the day 7-3. The afternoon session started with Oxfordshire, with Gloucestershire taking a 6-0 lead but momentum stumbled a little allowing Oxfordshire to claim 2 of the last 4 sets, making a final score 8-2 to Glos. The final match of the day against Sussex 3 produced the same scoreline with another 8-2 win and putting Gloucestershire top of the table with 8 points.

Back early in the morning on the Sunday, they played a crucial match against Surrey 2, as both teams were unbeaten at the time. With maximum wins from the men, and 1 apiece from the ladies, Gloucestershire won 8-2 and put daylight between them and the rest of the Counties. With a bye at lunchtime, Gloucestershire watched both Surrey 2 & Bucks win convincingly to put them both just 2 points behind Gloucestershire. Going into the final match of the weekend, Gloucestershire still needed a point from their match against Bucks to guarantee winning the Division. Bucks had strengthened their team with the addition of Ian Musk for the final day but Gloucestershire were just too strong for them winning 7-3 and taking the title of Division 2B champions and securing promotion next season to Division 1.
