English pair stun second seeds on way to quarters

Rhys Davies & Felix Thomis beat the second seeds en route to the quarter-finals of Cadet Boys’ Doubles at the Belgium Junior & Cadet Open, while Mari Baldwin reached the quarters in the girls’ event.

Davies & Thomis started their run by staging a remarkable recovery to knock the second seeds in the last 32. They lost the first game 11-1 to Ebrahim Abdulhakim Gubran of Yemen and Iran’s Navid Shams but came back to triumph 3-2 (1-11, 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 13-11).

In the last 16, they defeated the 16th seeds Tom Closset & Xavier Wats of the host nation 3-1 (14-12, 11-6, 8-11, 11-8), before going out in the quarters to Chinese Taipei duo Peng Jing-You & Yang Tsan-Wei, who were unseeded but went on to reach the final. The score was 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-6).
