TOWCESTER & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE

MINUTES OF THE COMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON TUESDAY 23rd MARCH 2017

IN ROTHERSTHORPE VILLAGE HALL

Present: Nick Howard (chairman), Rod Barr, Charlie Black, Ian Brown, Eddie Dennis, Dave Hyde,

Dave Kettell, Mike Perry, Ray Wood, Tony Woodward.

Apologies for absence: Iain Lindsay, Bob Read, Fred Wakefield.

Everdon club not represented (Peter Kent still away, no decision regarding fine.)

Matters arising from last meeting: None.

Treasurer’s Report: No report in Peter’s absence. Rod had been contacted by the Village Hall committee regarding unpaid hire charges for the previous three committee meetings. Peter had been absent for the most recent but there was no reason for the earlier invoices to be unpaid. Rod had subsequently confirmed the only other account signatory was previous Chairman Tony Woodward. Cheque for £24 signed and left for hall booking secretary as agreed.

Divisional Progress Reports: The deadline for league fixtures is Friday 31st March (Rule 9c) and all outstanding matches were scheduled by then with the following exceptions:-

16 January, Bugbrooke C v Daventry Fledglings (10th April ?)

24 March, Bugbrooke A v Towcester B – this match postponed because Bugbrooke could not field a competitive side and some felt it was unfair on Daventry Aces (vying with Towcester for the league title) if conceded points effectively decided the contest. It was generally agreed that it was unfortunate for this situation to have occurred in the last week of the season and that on this occasion only, a maximum extension of one month could be granted to enable the fixture to be completed provided that Towcester as the non-defaulting team were not themselves disadvantaged by player availability.

Although not related directly to the above, considerable discussion ensued about teams not adhering to existing rules on postponements – specifically about the maximum allowed, informing the Divisional Secretary and being ready with alternative dates. There was general agreement that we were too lenient and the non-application of current rules and penalties did not help. Proposals for rules amendments welcome.

Handicap Cup: Thanks to Mike and the semi finalists for arranging their matches. Rankings had been adjusted following much discussion and had resulted in one exceptionally close result (Bugbrooke B beat Towcester D by 2) although Daventry Fledglings had won by 59 versus Towcester B. Final on 3rd April at Bugbrooke. Reports on website.

Vic Fisher Memorial Doubles: Thanks to Yardley Gobion for another successful event, won by Jane Hobson and Clive Appleton from Division Three from a cast of 20 players.

Annual Tournament: 27th & 28th March. Finals 3rd April. Ian reported a reduced entry of 20 players to date and all club secretaries were asked to undertake a last minute canvassing for entries, especially since group games in the Open Singles would guarantee more matches for everyone. All club secretaries to find out why more of their players had chosen not to enter this year – discussion at the AGM.

Gerald Furniss Tournament: Nick confirmed that David Howard would organize this event at Towcester at the end of the season.

Presentation Dinner: Saturday 20th May. Nick confirmed arrangements in hand with The Saracen’s Head and menu forms would be distributed shortly. Tony volunteered to sort the trophy ordering and engraving. Club secretaries to confirm to Nick that their teams would contribute a raffle prize and that all perpetual trophies (league and tournament) would be cleaned and returned to Tony at the Annual Tournament.

County/National Report: Rod reported on a meeting with Peter Ratcliffe (Daventry League Secretary) about falling membership and teams appearing ‘short-handed’. Peter was proposing the possibility of 2 person teams in Daventry.

Next Meeting: The AGM on Tuesday 6th June. Rothersthorpe rep. to book hall please.

AOB: None.

Meeting closed at 9.10 pm.
