Closed Tournament 1998/99

Report

Top seed Mick Harper from St. Neots TTC took three titles at The Tucker Partnership Cambridge & District Table Tennis League Closed Tournament at the Netherhall Sports Centre on Saturday. He won the Mens Singles title for the first time defeating No.3 seed Martin Gray (Cambridge TTC) in a closely contested final. Gray had comfortably beaten second seed Paul Cicchelli (NCI) in the Semi Final. Harper defeated his doubles partner No.4 seed Martyn Livermore in the other Semi. Harper and Livermore won the Mens Doubles Final against Martin and Kevin Gray for his second title.

His third victory was against Swavesey’s Barry Hagger in the Veterans final.

Hagger himself had a good day winning the Restricted singles final (For players from outside Div 1) beating Mark Lillyman from St. Georges. His second victory came in the Handicap competition overcoming a starting handicap of +4 against Daniel Mitchell (+29) up to 41.

Cambridge player Gwen Stennett confirmed her No. 1 seeding to beat Clare Macrae from St. Georges in the Ladies final, and repeated the win alongside Juliet Merritt (Arbury) in the Ladies Doubles over Macrae and Jannett Klinke.

Macrae did gain her revenge over Stennett with Jeff Catlin in the Mixed Doubles final. Team mate Robert Custerson partnered Stennett.

David Miller (Haverhill) dominated the Junior events winning the Boys singles against Chris Badger (Stapleford), before teaming up with club colleague Alex Austin to beat the St. Ives pairing of David Blake and Robert Green.

Samantha Wilkin (Cambridge) was awarded the Junior Girls singles title as her opponent Emma Barron (St. Ives) failed to arrive.

The final event, the Drawn Doubles saw Tony Clarke (Cambridge) and Daniel Waters (Stapleford) beat Martin Gray and his 10 year old partner Mark Coteman (Impington).
