Report

Martin Gray (No.2 seed) won the Men’s Singles title for the first time on Saturday, defeating No.1 seed David Atkinson in a closely contested final. Gray battled back from losing the first leg to clinch the title, 21-17 in the third against his County colleague. He had knocked out last seasons champion Mick Harper in the semi-final.

Atkinson had an easier run to the final, defeating No.8 seed Andy Merritt in the other semi-final.

Gray also teamed up with his brother, Kevin to take the Men’s Doubles, gaining revenge for last season’s final defeat at the hands of Mick Harper and Martyn Livermore.

Injuries and prior engagements for top players meant that the Ladies Singles was contested by six Cadet girls, who also played for the Junior Girls Singles. There were different winners of the two trophies with Emma Cope taking the ladies title against Laura Stewart, but losing out to her sister, Claire in the Junior Girls.

Emma Cope and Laura Stewart paired up to take the Ladies Doubles from Claire Cope and Caroline Speer.

In fact St. Ives juniors did very well all day, with Thomas Whyborn overcoming David Blake in the Mixed Cadet Singles and also beating David Miller from Haverhill in the Handicap Singles. Blake was also beaten in the Under 17 Junior Boys Singles by Robert Green before they teamed up together to win the Junior Doubles against Alex Austin and Jamie Nunn from Haverhill.

Malcolm Stennett dominated the Veterans events beating last season’s champion Mick Harper in the Over 40’s, and Barry Hagger in the Over 50’s. He was however on the receiving end, against Cambridge club mate Andy Merritt in the Restricted Singles final.

Husband and wife team of Alan and Gill Fitzgerald from St. Ives won the Mixed Doubles against Martyn Livermore and his Step-Daughter Samantha Wilkin.

David Miller from Haverhill was paired with Pat O’Bryne in the Drawn Doubles. Unfortunately due to family commitments Pat was unable to play, so Dave Hodgson from Wisbech stepped in to take his place. They proved to be a formidable pair and won the closest final of the day against the Cambridge duo of Matt Custerson and Peters Zivtins.

The were 72 entries for this season’s Closed Tournament, and there were almost 300 games played on Saturday 11th Novmber 2000 at the Netherhall Sports Centre.

Number 1 seed David Atkinson (Cambridge University) gained revenge for his defeat by Martin Gray (No.2) (Cambridge) in last season’s final with a splendid display of defensive table tennis. He retrieved some remarkable shots from well away from the table and came back from a game down to clinch victory 21-15 in the final game. He had also got the better of Mick Harper (No.3) (NCI) in the semi-final. Gray came back from a game down to beat 5th seed Martyn Livermore (Cambridge) in the other semi to set up the finale between the top two. The main shock of the day came when Frederic Pauquay (CambridgeUniversity), knocked out Kevin Gray (No.4 seed) in the last 16.

Clare Macrae (St. Georges) also confirmed her No. 1 seeding in the Ladies event with a comfortable win over Cambridge University’s Yi Wen Chua in straight games.

Harper and Livermore (No.2) upset the seedings in the Men’s Doubles beating the top-seeded Gray brothers 23-21 in the third.

Yi Wen Chua teamed up with University clubmate, Seok Lay Ho to take the Ladies Doubles against St. Ives pairing of Sarah Berry and Joanne Stonehouse.

Macrae claimed her second title along with Jeff Catlin (Aventis) in the Mixed Doubles, when they overcame the challenge of Andy Merritt (Cambridge) and his wife Juliet (Arbury).

12 year old, William Hammond who has just started playing at the Cambridge Club caused a few raised eyebrows in the Mixed Cadet Singles, finally lost out to St. Ives’ Chris Meadowcroft.

Hammond (+37) however did get the better of Haverhill’s Jamie Dockerill (+30) in the Handicap final.

Alex Austin (Haverhill) proved too strong for Cambridge’s Luke Dryden in the Under 17 Junior Boys Singles, winning in straight games.

Sarah Berry got the better of St. Ives club-mate Sarah Berry 21-19 in the third game of the Under 17 Junior Girls Singles.

Probably the closest final of the day was the Junior Doubles, where the St. Ives pair of David Blake and Robert Green clinched victory with a deuce in the third game, against Haverhill’s Jamie Dockerill and Jamie Nunn.

Mick Harper gained his second trophy of the day in the Over 40 Veterans Singles, beating Malcolm Stennett (Cambridge) in the final.

Stennett made amends for that defeat in the Over 50’s final against Tony Clarke (Cambridge), who had reached the final with a splendid victory over Jim Reary of Aventis.

Peter Laughlin (Telecom) proved to be too strong for Terry Lane (Cambridge) in the Restricted Singles Final.

Daniel Waters (Stapleford teamed up with the Junior Boys champion, Alex Austin to defeat 11 year old Mark Coteman (Cambridge) and Martyn Livermore (Cambridge) in the Drawn Doubles.
