Tournament Report

David Atkinson and Clare Macrae retained their Men's and Ladies Singles Crowns at the Tucker Gardner Partnership Cambridge & District Table Tennis League Closed Tournament on Saturday at the Netherhall Sports Centre.

Atkinson from Cambridge University beat third seed Mick Harper (NCI) in the most exciting game of the day with three deuce games. Harper created an upset by knocking out number 2 seed Martin Gray in the semi final, and also went on to take the Veterans Over 40’s title with a straight games win over former County champion Geoff Davies, who had come out of retirement for the day to accompany his young sons who were playing in their first Junior events.

Macrae from St. Georges beat Allison Brooke from RCG Stapleford in the Ladies event, then teamed up with St Georges Club mate Jannett Klinke to overcome Brooke and Juliet Merritt (Arbury).

Martin Gray (Cambridge) put the disappointment of the singles behind him to land three trophies. He teamed up with his brother Kevin to take the Men’s Doubles against Atkinson and Lewis Clifford who had knocked out last season’s winners Harper and Martyn Livermore 21-19 in the third leg of the semi final.

Gray joined forces with Jannett Klinke to win the Mixed Doubles, against Macrae and Andrew Maguire, but one of his most impressive efforts came in the Handicap event.

Starting on (-25) up to 41 against David Miller (+10), Gray showed a great deal of consistency and composure to come out on top 41-30.

The Junior events were shared around with Luke Reger beating brother Angus in the Mixed Cadet Singles after losing the first leg.

Jamie Dockerill from Haverhill took the Under 17 Junior Boys Singles in an event that was also used as a ranking trial for the Cambs County selectors. No. 2 seed Dockerill overcame top seed Luke Dryden in straight games.

Sam Wilkin from Haddenham won the Under 17 Girls title with a hard fought victory against Cathy Lynch from Ellesmere.

Luke Dryden teamed up with Cambridge Club mate Matt Custerson to take the Junior Doubles event, beating the Reger brothers in a close final.

Custerson also triumphed again in the Drawn Doubles event with former County Junior Clive Hodgson. They proved to be too strong for Andy Maguire and Luke Reger.
