Martyn Livermore's Report
Number 2 seed Mick Harper (NCI) became the Cambridge & District League Table Tennis Champion for the second time on Saturday 23rd November 2002, at the Netherhall Sports Centre. His victory over five legs against newcomer Jens Ebbecke, a talented lefthander who is currently playing for the Cambridge Club was a superb advert for local table tennis. Ebbecke seeded 4 had comfortably beaten County Champion and No 1 seed David Atkinson (Camb. University) in the semi final to set up the final with Harper, who had avenged his defeat in last season’s County semi final with a 3-1 victory over Martyn Livermore (Cambridge TTC). Harper also retained the Over 40 Veterans title beating Reno Phyo in straight games.
Clare Macrae notched up her third consecutive triumph in the ladies singles with a straight sets win over her St. Georges’ club mate Jannett Klinke. Both ladies had beaten County Juniors Kayleigh Hubbard and Samantha Wilkin in their semi finals.
Harper and Livermore took the Men’s Doubles title against the Camb. University pairing of Atkinson and Lewis Clifford in a match that again went the full 5 legs.
Macrae and Klinke joined forces to defeat the junior pairing of Hubbard and Wilkin in the Ladies Doubles.
Macrae completed a hat-trick of trophies along with Jeff Catlin to pair up for the Mixed Doubles title. They beat Livermore and Wilkin 3-1 in the final.
Moumen Kuwaider (Fulbourn) playing in the event for the first time, defeated Keiran Mohan (Soham) in the Mixed Cadet Singles. Kuwaider hit back after Mohan had taken the first leg to win 3-1.
Matthew Custerson seeded 2 upset the seeding with his victory over Cambridge tam mate Luke Dryden in the Junior Boys Singles. After sharing the first two legs, Custerson edged the third 12-10, and got off to an early lead in the fourth to clinch the match 3-1.
Custerson & Dryden combined to take the Junior Doubles title against Anthony Burgess (Haverhill) and Keiran Phyo (Impington).
Samantha Wilkin retained the Junior Girls title overcoming County colleague Kayleigh Hubbard in straight games.
Fulbourn’s Ju Young Jeon (+22) proved too strong against Impington’s Jeff Catlin (0), coming out 41-27 in the Handicap final.
Tony Clarke (Cambridge TTC) overcame Roger Sulman (St. Georges) in the Over 50’s Veterans event.
Mark Lillyman (St Georges) took the Restricted Singles title with a 3-1 victory over Soham’s Martin Freeland.
In the Drawn Doubles Robert Fincham (Cambridge TTC) teamed up with Keiran Phyo to beat off the challenge of Terry Lane (Cambridge TTC) and 12 year old Ben Hubbard from Ellesmere.
The new rule of playing up to 11 rather than 21 proved to be pretty successful with many close games throughout the day. It will be interesting to see the feedback from the players that were playing the new system for the first time.
