Cambridge & District Table Tennis League

Tournament 2008/9

Report

The Cambridge & District Table Tennis League held the annual tournament at the Ross Peers Sports Centre in Soham on Saturday 24th January. This was the 17th time the event has been held but the first time outside Cambridge.

Shaun Hall from the Cambridge University Table Tennis Club won the Men’s Singles title at his first attempt with victory over 16 year old Daniel Fielding from St. Neots.

Hall knocked out top seed Martin Gray from St Georges in the last 16, before overcoming Nick Rate in the Quarter Final and Shaun Murray in the Semi Final. Fielding made his way to the final with excellent wins over Tim Avis and Hall’s University colleague Hamish Yeung in the Semi Final.

Despite his defeat in the Men’s final, Fielding showed great stamina and form to clinch wins in both the Junior Boys Singles, against Rhys Davies from Ellesmere, and the Restricted Singles defeating Caroline Wright from Haverhill.

He did however lose in the final of the Handicap competition to Matthew Rodgers where both started on (+10) up to 41.

Caroline Wright took advantage of her Haverhill team mate Maria Boulton’s absence to claim victory in the Ladies Singles and Mixed Doubles (along with Martin Gray), but could not quite clinch the Ladies Doubles with Greta Pocaite ans they were edged out by the Impington pairing of Helen Arnold an Tracey Sambrook.

Liam Mohan from Soham was unfortunate to finish runner up in three events, but his son Patrick did manage to claim a victory in the Junior Doubles with Emile Cole.

Thanks to everyone that took part or helped with the organising of the event.
