Cambridge & District Table Tennis League

Invitation Tournament 2009/10

Report

The Cambridge University players warmed up for the Varsity match at the end of February by winning all of the senior events at the Cambridge & District Table Tennis Association Invitation Tournament at Ross Peers Sports Centre in Soham on Saturday 30th January, 2010.

Shaun Hall retained the Men’s singles title with a win over surprise finalist Martin Freeland in the final. The draw and seedings were upset when Cambs County Champion and No 2 seed had to withdraw due to illness and this left the bottom half of the draw “up for grabs”. Freeland had an impressive 3 leg win over Kevin Gray in the semi final, but struggled to make an impact on Hall in the final.

Sasha Tsai overcame Tracey Sambrook in the Ladies final in 4 games. The unseeded Sambrook had fought her way through to beat last season’s winner Caroline Wright in the semi final. Sasha combined with Vanda Ho recovered a 2-1 deficit in a five set win to take the Ladies Doubles over Sambrook and Helen Arnold, before completing her third success in the Mixed Doubles with colleague Hamish Yeung, against Steve Annison and Caroline Wright.

Yeung teamed up with Shaun Hall to take the Men’s Doubles against Daniel Fielding and Matt Rogers.

Rhys Davies retained the Mixed Cadet Singles title with a four set win over Harris Ryder.

Another player retaining a trophy was Daniel Fielding in the Junior Boys singles, this time over Patrick Mohan.

Mohan did gain revenge however when he combined with Mark Coles to overcome Fielding and Lawrence Jackson in the Junior doubles final.

Two juniors battled to the final of the Handicap singles with Howard Leak not dropping a point in the final against Amy Catlin.

Paul Jackson got the better of Rob Pownall in the Restricted Singles final for players registered outside the 1st division.

Kevin Gray featured in most of the final matches played on a day that lasted just under 13 hours. He played consecutive matches for the best part of 3 hours, but finished on the losing side of the net in the Veteran’s Singles final where a hard hitting display by Liwu Wei proved too much for Gray. However in his final game of the day, he and his partner Margaret Chambers led 2-0 in the Veteran’s Drawn Doubles, only to see their opponents Marc Meunier and Peters Zivtins claw their way back into the match taking the final game 16-14.

Zivtins also won the Drawn Doubles final with Matt Rogers against Steve Annison and Howard Middleton.
