The first round of fixtures proved very encouraging, despite the non appearance of the St. Ives third team. Hopefully their side will be sorted out before this weeks game against Ellesmere. The standard was probably better than expected although there will be some players that do not take part any more, as they will now have played in a full league side after the first fixtures this week.

There were one or two very close games, notably Cambridge’s Matt Custerson’s 21-19 in the third leg win over Stephen Pickering from St. Ives II.

Cambridge I consolidated their position at the top of the County Junior League despite only managing a 3-2 victory against Ellesmere. Eleven year old Luke Reger was again unbeaten for the Stetchworth based side and therefore maintained his 100% record.

St. Ives I missed their chance to go top after suffering a crushing 0-5 defeat against their own third team.

Cambridge I only just held on to top spot after a 3-2 defeat against St. Ives I. Nick Bone was the star player against the leaders winning both of his games and combining with Jamie Ging to take the doubles.

In the only other game played this week Ellesmere’s Luke Reger maintained his 100% singles record with close wins over Joe and Stephen Pickering from St. Ives II. The St. Ives pair gained revenge against Luke’s brother Angus.

Cambridge I go into a two week break (half term / bonfire night) with a one point lead over St. Ives III, both teams recording comfortable 5-0 victories.

Nick Bone of St. Ives I lost his 100% record against Joe and Stephen Pickering of St. Ives II.

Luke Reger of Ellesmere, maintained his 100% record against Haddenham, for whom Liz Heyes gained her first win of the season over Catherine Lynch. However, Catherine got the better of Samantha Wilkin. This game included three Cambridgeshire Junior girls, an extremely rare event.

The top three teams all had convincing wins against lower opposition, and St. Ives I leap-frogged Ellesmere into fourth place. The best game of the day was probably St. Ives II’s Adam Kinder’s 21-15 in the third leg win over Michael Page of Cambridge II. Both players were playing their first game of the season.

The top match of the day on Friday was between St. Ives I and Ellesmere. The Saints came out on top in a thrilling encounter. The match went to the final set between Jamie Ging and Luke Reger. Ging’s serve and powerful forehand always troubled the consistent Reger, and he became the first player to beat the Ellesmere player in the League this season with a 21-16 in the third victory.

In the other games this week the Joe and Stephen Pickering from St. Ives II easily overcame Bottisham to push their team into joint second position with their third team who were not in action this week.

At the other end of the table Cambridge II secured a 4-1 victory over Haddenham. Mark Coteman scored a maximum for Cambridge, and Alex Ecob won his first set of the season against 8 year old Christian Mohan. However Samantha Wilkin got the better of Ecob to gain Haddenham’s only win of the day.

Arbury have now withdrawn from the league as they have struggled to get sides out. Their to date results will stand.

St Ives III won the battle of the two top sides against Cambridge I, setting up a superb finale for the last week of the season. Andy Blackmore and Matt Nash destroyed the challenge of Karl Ingle and Dan Spencer, only losing one leg all evening.

This leaves Cambridge holding a one point lead at the top but having completed their 8 matches. This week sees St. Ives II and St. Ives III clash in their final match in a "winner takes all" situation.

In the only other game played last Friday Luke Reger got back to winning ways against Cambridge II comfortably winning both his singles and helping Catherine Lynch to a doubles win, which clinched the game for Ellesmere.

On December 10th the youngsters will take part in a singles tournament between themselves.

We hope to start another Junior League at the start of February and teams are invited to send their entries to Martyn Livermore.

St Ives III won the battle with their second team to clinch the inaugural County Junior League thanks mainly to the efforts of Andy Blackmore who won both his singles and helped Matt Nash to a doubles win over Joe and Stephen Pickering.

This result pushed the Cambridge 1st team into 3rd place.

In the other games Luke Reger of Ellesmere finished the season at the top of the averages with two more wins over tom Kindred and David Collings from Bottisham. Catherine Lynch also beat Kindred and helped Reger to win the doubles for a 4-1 win.

St Ives I completed their season winning 4-1 against Cambridge II.

This Friday sees the County Junior League tournament which sees the ages of the players range from 6 to 14.
