Les Constable's report on the season

This first season of the Cambs Table Tennis League provided some very competitive games, especially in the first division. YMCA had obtained the services of a formidable trio in the shape of Bill Humphries, Reg Edwards and Ray Barrer. These three players carried all before them and enabled YMCA to win the league without losing a match and in fact the only sets they lost were 10 which were inflicted by Les Betterman (twice), George Wright, Peter French against the famous trio with the other sets being lost by Ted Hewitt and Ken Speechley. The Wesley Fellowship team of George Wright, Peter French, Fred Buck and the author did remarkably well and finished [second] on sets average over College Servants. Barrer obtained 100% for YMCA and Edwards 98%. YMCA B finished head of Division 2 [winning eight games] and drawing two games in the process.

This was a thrilling start to the newly formed Association and all players in the first division fought well and although YMCA monopolised the league I can remember the hard fought games I had and did not feel disgraced against Humphries, Edwards and Barrer and was pleased to get a set off Barrer and Humphries. YMCA was the centre of table tennis in Cambridge and was responsible for the game gaining in popularity over the years ahead. There were many young YMCA players coming along such as Orriss, Sid Birch, Butler and Fred Tilbrook and this boded well for the future of YMCA table tennis. Other players prominent in the league were Ralph Rust (later to become Secretary of Torchbearers), Claude Attwood of CO-OP (formerly of Wesley), W.H.Nunn and Ray Woodward of Histon, Gerald Hedge and Bobby Johnson of Whittlesford, Sam Tebbitt (Cambs wicketkeeper) and Henry Pink of College Servants, Cyril Taylor and George Newell of Wesley and A.Norton of New Chesterton Institute.
