Cambridge & District TTL 1937-1938

Les Constable's report on the season

The second season of the league saw YMCA A again take command with the usual team of Humphries, Edwards and Barrer with the very good players J.Safwat of Egypt and John Hughes in reserve. They indeed did not lose a match and bettered their record of the previous season by one set. New Chesterton Institute were this season's runners-up and Wesley Fellowship did not have a very good season and finished in mid-league position. Les Betterman had transferred to New Chesterton Institute this season which enabled them to win the majority of their games and which was to vastly improve the standard of their play in future years. Edwards, Humphries and Barrer all had 100% in the league which I do not think has been equalled to this day, so one can imagine the strength of the YMCA club at this period - almost invincible! Arthur Warren of College Servants had a good season and had good tussles with the YMCA trio before losing to Edwards and Barrer but beating Hughes in two sets. Les Betterman also had a good season and only lost to Edwards, Barrer and the young Orriss.

YMCA C finished at the head of Division Two with fifteen points with Histon Institute B just one point behind. New team Parkinsons of Saffron Walden finished third and won six of their matches.
