Cambridge & District TTL 1951-1952

Les Constable's report on the season

In the 1951/52 season the League Championship was again won by Newnham Institute who had a very good season and with the team of John Cornwell, John Thurston and Ron Nunn they were too much for the opposition despite great efforts by New Chesterton Institute and YMCA. In the second division POst Office headed the league and consequently gained promotion with Shire Hall in second position and Sparta unfortunately being left at the bottom. In the third division New Chesterton Institute IV were successful with Central Old Boys in second position. RAF Cambridge were the unfortunate team to go down into the fourth division. In the fourth division Shire Hall II succeeded in gaining top position with St Georges MC as runners-up. Marshall II were the unfortunate wooden spoonists!

During this season many notable successes were achieved the most notable being the achievement of young Pat Inglis who won the Kent Junior Open Championships and the Bucks Junior Open. In the Bucks Final she defeated Beryl Spooner of Middlesex who was considered a very good player at this time. In the English Junior Open Championships she only lost to Sharon Konchrate of the USA after three sets after leading 10-8 in the final set. A fine season for the Cambs Junior. Also in the Bucks Open Championships which were held at Slough John Cornwell reached the last eight of the Mens Singles with an entry of 300 before losing to Michael Thornhill of Middlesex (a leading English youngster) at 17 and 18. In the same championships John Thurston and John Coteman reached the 3rd round of the Mens Doubles and John Cornwell and Fred Tilbrook the 4th round.

The same year in an RAF match John Cornwell defeated Ken Craigie (a Cambridge man really) of Middlesex by two games to love. Craigie once reached the Final of the English Closed Championships before losing to Johnny Leach (World Champion). In the Bedford Radius Championships held this season was one of the best Finals I had seen was when John Thurston opposed Colin Crowe of Bedford. There was a very good crowd and Crowe was on his best form. With some fantastic retrieving he took the first set at 22-20 and then likewise in the second set despite Thurston's attack and defence. Thurston won the nextset at 18 with some inspired table tennis (attack and defence) but Crowe was not to be denied and won the fourth set at 9 with brilliant play. Thurston had previously beated Crowe in a National County Match against Beds so that Crowe had certainly improved his game quite a lot.

In the Cambridge Handicap Team Championships New Chesterton Institute defeated Newnham by 5 games to 4 after a very good match with George Lawrence being in good form for NCI and Tony Lyon gaining a crucial victory.

In the Final of the Singles event John Thurston beat Ron Nunn 15, 9 and 15 and in the Final of the Doubles event Jack Baughan and Leslie Constable could not overcome a handicap of six and lost to D.Gausden and S.Raynor 21-23, 16-21.

This was a very eventful and exciting season with some of the cares of the second world war being brushed away.
