Cambridge & District TTL 1956-1957
Les Constable's report on the season
For the first time in their history the Wesley team won the championship
of Division 1 in the Cambs League. The team of John Cornwell, Chris Reeve,
Jack Baughan and the Author (who played an occasional game!) blended very
well and right up to the last match of the season the issue was in doubt.
The match in question was against Telephones 1 and after a thrilling fight
Wesley were successful by 5 games to 4. This was the 20th anniversary of
the League and it will be remembered that in that season of 1936/37 Wesley
finished second toa strong YMCA side so that it was one better after 20
years!
Sadly Chris Reeve who was a young and up and coming player was laid low by
leukaemia and much to the grief of many players died shortly afterwards.
[Note: Les refers to Chris Reeve playing matches up to at least the 1959-1960
season, so the above paragraph appears to have been recorded by Les under
the wrong year.]
