Cambridge & District TTL 1969-1970

Les Constable's report on the season

In the 1969/70 season the Cambridge & District League had 9 Divisions with Divisions 4 & 5 being sectionalised (4A and B) (5A, B & C) with 102 teams and there was also a Ladies League of one division with eight teams. It is interesting to note that in the 1st Division of the Mens League New Chesterton Institute were the champions but Soham were well down the division and looked in danger of relegation but survived and were to be champions for eleven consecutive seasons and at the present time still hold the title - a marvellous feat. Even at that time Soham had three teams in the first division and they made it four in a few years. At this time University Press were a good team and were well up in the division. It will also be noted in this season that Hills Road Methodists were in action in the fifth division but several years later the Hills Road Church was demolished and the club was reformed as Wesley Methodist with the matches being played at King Street and, incidentally, reforming the previous Wesley team that had first played in the league in 1936 and had won the championship in 1957. Impington and Torchbearers were in the first division as were the University, Guildhall, Wilburton and YMCA. It will be noted that YMCA as seasons went by were hampered by being in new premises which caused a lot of adjustment and consequently they could only run one team with directly arranged matches meaning that they had to play all their matches away which was very inconvenient for everybody. How are the mighty fallen! New Chesterton Institute's team in the season was John Thurston, Steve Andrews and Vic Tiplady.
