Cambridge & District TTL 1970-1971

Les Constable's report on the season

The 1970/71 season saw the advancement of the University team and they clinched the title by two points from YMCA 2 who in turn beat NCI 1 into second place. Press 1, Guildhall 1 and Soham 1 followed in that order. The University were were served by Alan Ponder, P.Tye and John Correll. Ponder played very well although he did not play the full season but John Correll annexed the largest proportion of points and only dropped nine games. Boothby played fewer matches but only dropped eleven games - the same as Ponder. YMCA 2 were served by Ken Muhr, Sally Browning, Geoff Coteman and Mick Harper and this squad proved very effective and fully deserved their position in the table. Harper only dropped three games in the 36 he played and Muhr and Coteman also had a good average. John Thurston, Steve Andrews and John Baird were the mainstays of New Chesterton Institute with Thurston only dropping nine games throughout the season. David Obee also played a few games. University Press were very well served by Tony Littlechild who only dropped 6 games during the whole season. Paul Chisnall and David Alexander gave good support but Dick Clode who only played 21 games was successful in 20 and indeed proved himself invaluable. Guildhall were again served by Albert Jackson and Gerald Atkinson with Paul Charlton giving good service as the thirs man. Atkinson was the most successful and won forty out of sixty games. St Georges 1 and Cambridge Evening News were relegated at the end of the season and Soham 3 and Impington 2 were promoted. 104 teams participated in the League which had eight [sic] divisions. A Ladies Division was again run with YMCA 1 and YMCA 2 taking the top two places. Manor finished two points behind YMCA 2.
