Cambridge & District TTL 1971-1972
Les Constable's report on the season
The 1971/72 season was one that saw University Press really on top of the
world and they won the championship by six clear points in front of Soham 2.
Last season's University 1 could only finish in fifth place although they had
lost Alan Ponder in the meantime and who was now playing for University
Press so he was still in the "University". The University Press again had
Tony Littlechild as their hero as he only dropped five out of sixty-six
games against good opposition. Alan Ponder and Paul Chisnall made up the rest
of the team and altogether only 44 games were dropped. For New Chesterton
Institute John Thurston was again the mainstay and he won fifty-two out of
sixty-three games. Steve Andrews and D.Fuller also played well to enable the
Institute to obtain second place in the league. Soham 2 beat Soham 1 in the
table and Paul Day only dropped four games which was the start of an
illustrious career for Cambs and England. Day was supported by John Ashman
and they did very well to beat Soham 1 in the league who included Mick Palmer,
Steve Palmer and Keith Richardson in their ranks. It is interesting to note
that Keith Richardson was playing for Soham 1 whilst Paul Day was playing
for Soham 2! In this season both Impington 1 and Impington 2 were relegated
to Division 2, Impington 1 not winning a single match and finishing bottom
of the table despite the presence of Brian Judd and Trevor McGee. University
Press 2 and Telephones 1 were promoted from the Second Division. There
were 103 teams in nine divisions which were again sectionalised.
In the Final of the Knockout Handicap Trophy University Press 1 defeated
Soham 5 by eight games to one, so that they completed the double.
