Cambridge & District TTL 1972-1973
Les Constable's report on the season
One could not quite visualise the change that would take place in the 1972/73
season when without the services of Tony Littlechild the University Press
fell to sixth place in the 1st division and this season saw the ascendancy
of Soham 1 who were to win the league for the next 10 years at least with the
team of Paul Day, Mick Palmer, Steve Palmer and Brian Jones. Paul did
not play in many of the matches but when he did he only dropped two games out
of twenty-seven. Mick Palmer only dropped eight games and Brian Jones and
Steve Palmer gave good support. Although Soham were successful they only
pipped New Chesterton Institute by one point with an almost identical sets
average and in fact the two games that NCI lost were both to Soham who went
through the season unbeaten and had three drawn games. John Thurston was
again the mainstay of New Chesterton Institute and only lost eight games
throughout the season with Steve Andrews and D.Fuller giving good support.
YMCA who were in third position (two points behind New Chesterton Institute)
were the only team that were not defeated by Soham as they drew on each
occasion. Albert Jackson and Paul Charlton were the mainstay of the Guildhall
team who finished fourth and Sid Burgess and Tim Speller kept the flag flying
for Wilburton who were in fifth position. Soham 3 and University 2 were
relegated to the second division and New Chesterton Institute 2 were
promoted from the second division. 98 teams participated in the league with
five sectionalised divisions.
Spicers were successful in winning the Knockout
Handicap Trophy when they won a thrilling encounter with Soham 1.
Horace Saunders won all three of his games including a victory over Paul Day.
