Cambridge & District TTL 1975-1976

Les Constable's report on the season

Soham 1 again retained their title in the 1975/76 season and had a four point lead over NCI 1. Mick Palmer was the most successful player for Soham and won sixty-one games out of sixty-three throughout the season with Keith Richardson winning fifty-six out of sixty. Steve Palmer also gave good support and only lost seventeen games. This record of the three players was too much for the rest of the teams in the division and they cruised comfortably home at the end of the season. New Chesterton Institute who were runners-up in the division again had a very good leader in John Thurston who only lost seven games throughout the season. Steve Andrews also had a good season as did Ken Green and both players gave very good support to Thurston who seems to go on and on... Incidentally Soham only dropped one point throughout the season and that was against New Chesterton Institute 1 who themselves dropped five points. New Chesterton Institute 2 finished third in the division six points their first team with Wilburton and Soham 2 following on in that order. David Tiplady was the most successful player for NCI with a 69% record with Ron Nunn and Mick Byrd giving good support. The Wilburton players comprising of Burgess, Sizer and Speller gave a good account of themselves all having about the same record and Brian Jones and Brian Richardson were the mainstay of Soham 2 with Brian Jones having an 88% record. University Press 1 were well down the league this season and despite having nine players participating at some time during the season finished in seventh position with Paul Chisnall having a 60% record. Telephones 1 who finished above Press had the services of Bob Pettit, Martyn Murden and A.Smith with Murden having the best average throughout the season. YMCA 2 and Torchbearers 1 were relegated to the second division and Telephones 2 and Fisons 1 were promoted from the second division.

In the Handicap Knockout Trophy Soham 1 retained the cup by beating Wesley 2 5-4 after an extraordinary match in which Wesley at one time led 4-0 but then faltered in the next five games - quite a crowd watched the match which was played at Impington Village College. Ninety-three teams participated in the league with five sectionalised divisions.
