Les Constable's report on the season
Soham 1 again carried all before them in the 1979/80 season and even improved
upon their record of the previous season by one point although Keith
Richardson could only muster 96% this time! Soham of course won all their games
although they had a close one with St Ives 1 at 6-4. Stuart Palmer finished
with 97%, Mick Palmer with 90% and Andy Withers with 85% - a very
creditable record by all players. St Ives improved their position this season
by deposing New Chesterton Institute from second place. They had the services
of Alan Smith, Sid Burgess and Gary Jordan which was quite a strong trio.
Gary Jordan procured 87% and Burgess and Smith 79%. Again Les Wooding played
a few games with success. New Chesterton Institute who finished in third
position again had the services of John Thurston, David Tiplady and Ken
Green who averaged 84%, 68% and 46% respectively with Thurston winning 56
out of 66 games - not bad for a seasoned veteran! Impington 1 (promoted the
previous season) and YMCA 1 were relegated to Division 2 - a blow to YMCA with
Press 1 again just escaping relegation. University 1 and 2 were promoted
from Division 2 with something to spare but University 3 were relegated to
Division 3 with Haverhill 1 and Press 2. Walmsley had a 94% record for
University 1. 108 teams participated in the league with five sectionalised
divisions.
