NOTICE TO ALL TEAM CAPTAINS:

WALTHAM FOREST TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE – SINGLES CUP

12 teams have been drawn into 3 groups of 4 teams: Group A, Group B and Group C.

The format remains as a Round-Robin in the groups, and the group-stage matches will take place over the first, second and third weeks of the contest.

Each team will have three matches to be played in their group-stage rounds.

I attach the schedule of group-stage fixtures.

Detailed below are the rules for this year’s League Singles Cup competition.

Eligibility - League Rule 17. [C]: Only players registered with the WFTTL shall be eligible to play in these competitions, and from the SEMI-FINALS, only players who have played in FOUR or more LEAGUE matches at the time of such round shall be eligible to compete. This will not include any postponed matches that the player may have played in, had the match been played; nor where a walkover has been given by the opposing team. Permission MAY be given for a player NOT qualifying on such basis by the K.O. Competition Secretary, and then only if it is considered that the player substituting is of EQUAL or LESSER ability. Application for such permission must be received by the Secretary in writing.

Matches will be all singles.  Three players in each team as usual.  The scoring will be exactly the same as for League matches: 1 point for each individual game won.

·                     Team Playing Order: Any, because each match is a round-robin, and all players play each other over the course of the 9 sets of the match.

·                     Please remember to score each match in games, not sets. Each of the 9 sets is the best of 5 games (11-up), and will be scored 3-0 or 0-3, 3-1 or 1-3, or 3-2 or 2-3. The total, aggregate number of games won by each team will determine the winning team. (Note that it is possible to achieve a draw by counting games won.)

·                     “Playing Up” or “Playing Down” in Cup Competition Matches

Just as with regular League matches, it is the spirit of the Cup competition matches that all teams should be fielded from the same squads of players throughout the season, as far as possible. It is understood however that such factors as unexpected illness or clashes of other commitments will necessitate the occasional use of substitute players to ensure a full team turnout.

In order to continue to ensure full team turnouts for all Cup competition matches, the rules concerning the restrictions on players ‘playing up’ or ‘playing down’ which apply to League matches shall not apply to Cup competition matches, providing that every effort has been made to organise teams in accordance within the spirit of the competitions described above. That is: that teams shall remain composed of players from the squads which were registered at the start of the season, as far as possible. Where substitutes are necessary, these should preferably be of a comparable standard to the missing players.

If it becomes apparent that manipulation of teams by clubs is taking place to gain an advantage – for example, where a team gets to a semi-final or final match and is then composed of significantly stronger players – steps may be taken to impose rules to restrict such player-mobility in future seasons. Your conscientious co-operation is therefore requested to maintain the fairness of future Cup competitions.

·                     Late Arrivals: Where it is agreed to allow a player to play who is expected to arrive after the start time, that player shall complete his/her outstanding sets immediately on arrival.

·                     A Walkover may occur if it is conceded by one team (the first team) that it is unable to meet another team (the second team) to play a particular match fixture, and agrees to allow the second team to win that match by default. A Walkover is never desirable, and should always be avoided by making every effort to play the match in question, even if it means postponing the date of the match by mutual agreement, and with the approval of the K. O. Competition Secretary. Where a Walkover does occur, the minimum number of points required for the winning of the fixture shall be awarded to the second team, in the same spirit as that of League Rule 13 [C]. In Singles Cup matches this shall be construed as a win by 15 games to nil.

I enclose the scorecards for the group-stage matches, showing opponents, dates and venues of matches.

Please ensure that the scorecards are fully completed, including both Team Captains’ signatures, and returned to me promptly, by both teams, at the address shown on the back of the scorecard.

Don’t forget that a stamp is required, and a speedy return of the card would be much appreciated.

Alternatively, you may scan and e-mail the copy to me at: tg.jones1@btinternet.com

Failure to return a scorecard will incur a fine of £2.00.

If, for any reason, the match is not able to be played, the HOME Team Captain should inform me of the re-scheduled match date.

I would remind you that teams failing to fulfil a fixture in any group-stage match will not be eligible for the following rounds of the competition, and will be fined £10.00.

The winners of Groups A, B and C will go through to the Semi-Finals. A team will win its group-stage and progress to the Semi-Finals if it wins the greatest number of matches in its group.

Where there is a tie for matches won, then games won will be compared. If there is still a tie, then points won will be counted.

The fourth qualifying place for the Semi-Finals will come from the best overall Runner-up, which shall be determined as follows:

·         Firstly, put to one side those three teams which are Group Winners, as they are automatically through to the Semi-Finals.

·         Then, of all the remaining teams, select the team with the greatest number of matches won.

·         Where there is a tie between two or more teams for matches won, select the team with the greatest number of individual games won.

·         If there is still a tie, count the total aggregate score of individual points won to confirm the fourth Semi-Final place.

Semi-Finals will be played during week commencing Monday 5th March 2018. A further draw will take place to determine which teams play which in the Semi-Finals.

The Final will be played during week commencing Monday 12th March 2018.

Wishing you all an enjoyable season,

Tom.
