Wanderers A 4 v Westfield A 6
The return of Kevin Bird and Travis Holly saw the visitors inflict the first defeat of the season on the hosts. Bird comfortably saw off Graham Ellson and Tony Wharton but was taken to the wire by Andy Law, before winning out 11-6, 10-12, 8-11, 13-11, 11-5. An in form Law won out 11-2 in the 5th end against Holly, who edged out Wharton 11-6 in the 5th and defeated Ellson 12-10, 11-8, 11-7. However, a disappointing Paul Benko failed to gain a leg for the visitors to leave the result dependent on the doubles. Bird and Holly clinched a win with a 11-1, 12-14, 11-8, 11-8 victor over Wharton and Law.
St John A 5 v Chesterwell A 5
Jon Perkins, despite battling hard is finding the going tough and again failed to register for the hosts. However, Grant Timms, having another good season scored an excellent treble to restore the scoreline. Richard Wills, one of the leagues more inconsistent players, was in good form seeing off Valdy Papiernik and Stan Galkowski and only Mike Pond prevented a treble, winning a topsy turvy game in 5 ends, 3-11, 11-2. 11-9, 10-12, 11-5. Having won5 out of the 6 singles, the hosts were slight favourites for their 1st win of the season, but Wills/Timms went down 8-11, 9-11, 8-11 to a doubles pairing of Galkowski and Pond.
Thrapston 0 v WDHA Royals 10
Prior to this last game of the opening 6 weeks, over 80% of the results had been either 5-5 or 6-4 and no clean sweeps recorded. As a result, this was a real shock as an in form Thrapston were swept aside. Trevor Beard, in his first outing fought hard for the hosts, losing out 5-11 and 10-12 in the 5th against Virat Patel and Abin Islam respectively. Chris Warliker took the 100% Patel to five, going down 13-11, 8-11, 10-12, 11-8, 8-11. Thrapston should not be disheartened as they gained legs in 7 of the games and look in much better form than the last few seasons.
Chesterwell B 9 v Old Grammarians A 1
League leaders Chesterwell B recorded another good performance with this 9-1 home victory over the O.G.s whose cause wasn’t helped by only fielding 2 players. Johnathon Driscoll and Daniel Mann both carded good trebles and were well supported with a brace from Luke Hughes. Mick Ball salvaged a lone point for the visitors with a good win over Hughes and the evening ended with Driscoll & Mann gaining a hard fought doubles victory over Ball & Phil Laurence in 5 ends.
Higham Harriers B 2 v Chesterwell C 8
Chesterwell C carded a good 8-2 away victory against the Harriers and their 8 point haul sees them move up to 3rd place in the league. Clare Coles led the way for the victors with a fine maximum and was well backed up with a brace each from Stuart Coles and Keith Taylor. Neil Stevens and Katie Hicks both carded single wins for the hosts and the two of them put up a great performance in a very close doubles contest against Clare & Stuart before finally losing with a 10-12,8-11,12-10,12-10,10-12 scoreline.
Higham Band A 4 v Westfield B 6
For the 2nd week running, there was only one close match in div. 2 and this week it was Westfield B who edged out the Band Club with a 6-4 scoreline. David Rogers and Steve Fuller both carded excellent hat-tricks for the visitors whilst Steve Mansfield, Perce Sharp and Ian Sclater all replied for the hosts with a single win apiece. The evening concluded with the Band Club’s Mansfield & Sclater gaining a good 4 set doubles victory over Westfield’s unbeaten pairing of Rogers & Fuller.
Wanderers D 0 v Stanwick VHTTC 10
Stanwick’s 2nd 10-0 victory on the trot sees them consolidate their 2nd place in the league and this week it was Wanderers D turn to end the night pointless. Maximums all round from Ian Baldock, Graham Taylor and Geoff Neville suggested that the concluding doubles might be a bit one-sided but the Wanderers’ Roger Ellingham & Graham Babbage put up a tremendous fight and in a highly entertaining contest finally lost out to Baldock & Taylor with a 11-9, 3-11, 7-11, 20-18, 10-12 scoreline.
Chesterwell D 4 v WDHA Challengers B 6
WDHA Challengers B are still drawn with Westfield C this week in top place as both teams scored 6 points. Mid placed Chesterwell fought well, Duncan Wright was unstoppable winning his 3rd hat trick without losing an end, including taking the scalp of Hubert Malenda, who, up until now, hadn't lost a set. Caspian Wagner took his point from Daniel Bain after some close games, 11-5 in the 5th end. For the opposition, both Kavish Dodhia and Malenda won twice, Bain scoring a single with the decisive point Dodhia/Malenda took Wagner/Wright in three easy ends.
Old Grammarians B 8 v WDHA Rising Stars D 2
Old Gramms B, took the lead from their C side this week although they are 1 match ahead with Roger Fleming playing up for Martin Rice and was the only unbeaten player, slipping up one end against Jiten Gopal. Colin Lord and David Bayes played consistently well, winning two points each, without losing an end but both losing to Gopal in the 5th end. Bayes and Fleming took the doubles in 3 ends.
Higham Band B 5 v WDHA Raj Riders C 5
Raj Riders are in 7th place at the moment, but have to catch up on matches as they are still 2 behind Band, and 9 points. For Higham, Deirdre Kiziak scored a perfect hat trick and now has 2 under belt. Stuart Futrill won twice, losing to Aum Lakhani 11-13, 6-11, 13-11, 12-10, 9-11. Swati Jethwa who is having some close sets this season, just lost out 9-11 in the 5th end to Futrill. All of the Riders made short work of John Yeates, who is yet to score. The Riders had to pull out all of the stops to equalize in the final doubles, Akash Kumar/Aum Lakhani took on Kiziak/Futrill and did just that-11-8 , 2-11, 8-11, 12-10 and 11-6.
Westfield C 6 v Wanderers E 4
Wanderers E are just 4 points behind leaders Westfield C after this contest, although they are still one match behind. There were a lot of close games as you would expect. Only Jay Rogers come away on the night without a point for Westfield, but he also put up a brave fight. Both Asish Nandi and Stuart Holroyd scored hat tricks. Steve Hoole was a little unlucky not to score going out both times in the 5th end. David May and Hoole edged home the doubles point 9-11,11-4,11-7,6-11 and 11-8 to lessen the loss.
