Chesterwell A 6 v WDHA Royals 4
The visitors’ fielding only one of their opening winning side and followed the pattern of the previous season. An unusual feature was that they registered one win each, but against different opponents. Perhaps the most unlikely result was Mike Pond going down 11-6, 12-14, 10-12, 6-11 to Amit Shah. Ethan Ali, making a return to the League winning 11-5, 11-7, 11-2 over Valdy Papiernik, and Abin Islam winning out 11-7, 7-11, 11-7, 11-5 over Stan Galkowski. A fourth point for the Royals was earned in the doubles where Ali and Shah won out 11-8, 8-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7 over Pond and Galkowski.
Thrapston 7 v St John A 3
Ian Donaldson, who tends to start the season well, followed this trend with an excellent treble, his highlight being a 11-5, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8 win over Grant Timms. Chris Warliker, lost out 11-13, 12-14, 11-9, 9-11, 4-11 to Timms but saw off Jon Perkins and Richard Wills with reasonable ease. Wills gained a 3rd point with a 11-13, 11-7, 11-7, 11-8, win over Alan Tyler, making his return after a lengthy absence. St John A were somewhat unlucky not to gain a further point when Perkins and Timms went down 11-6, 10-12, 7-11, 11-7, 9-11 to Donaldson and Warliker in the doubles.
Higham Harriers A 3 v Chesterwell B 7
For the second successive week, a side fielded two players and won comfortably. The hosts dreadful start continued and although Graham Bird and Norman Wooster gained legs against Graham Ellson and Carlton Ellwood, they never really threatened and with Mick Malins well off pace, the only close match was the doubles, where Ellson/Ellwood won out 14-12, 12-10, 7-11, 11-13, 11-5 over Bird and Wooster.
Wanderers B 5 v Old Grammarians A 5
A hard fought treble by Steve Kendall earned the visitors a draw. He was taken to five by both Stewart Williams and Bob Hickson, winning out 11-8 and 11-9 respectively. He then joined with Mick Ball for a 6-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 doubles win over Williams and Hickson. Mick Ball, opened his account for the season with a 11-7, 11-8, 11-2 win over Hickson and Phil Laurence, although failing to register, gained a leg in all three encounters.
Wanderers D 2 v Higham Band A 8
A closer match than the score suggests, with the visitors wining three of the four 5th end sets on the night to secure the victory. Roger Ellingham winning out 11-2, 10-12, 11-4, 6-11, 11-7 over Deirdre Kiziak and Dave May likewise in four ends 18-16, 11-6, 9-11, 11-8 for Wanderers’ only points. Nigel Magee and Keith Stockley securing hat tricks with Kiziak picking up a single with her win over Graham Babbage, and joining with Magee to take the doubles in three ends 11-6, 11-8, 11-5 over Ellingham and Babbage.
Chesterwell C 5 v Westfield C 5
This fixture ended all square with some interesting results. Maxine Shears, who is usually on top form registering hat tricks, only managed to score one on the night, against Mark Holly, as did Clare Coles. Stuart Coles went one better with an additional point over Tim Mason 11-4, 11-6, 13-15, 11-3, with the only unbeaten player on the night, Westfield’s Steve Fuller, but he was pushed to a 5th end by both Stuart and Clare Coles. The Coles duo contested the doubles over Mason and Fuller winning out in five, 11-9, 11-2, 10-12, 10-12, 13-11 to earn a draw.
Old Grammarians B 0 Wanderers C 10
This 10-0 victory does not really reflect the true story of the game with only 2 of the 10 games decided by the short route. Martin Rice and Colin Lord for O.G’s unlucky to both lose out in the 5th end on two of their three singles games against James Findlay and Tony Wallis, and both losing to Maurice Jones in four.
St John B 9 v Higham Harriers B 1
Only two sets in this fixture needed an extra end, Alan Hill’s match against Craig Hartwell, with Hill winning out 11-6, 11-9, 10-12, 11-4 and the doubles where David Hatherall and Paul Lipczak encountered Hartwell and Neil Stevens, and lost out 18-20, 8-11, 11-6, 9-11 for newly promoted Harriers only point of the match. A brutal baptism of fire for Phill Inman, Craig Hartwell and Neil Stevens from the experienced trio of Hill, Hatherall and Lipczak, who all registered hat tricks.
Higham Band B 5 v Higham Harriers C 5
No-one from Higham Band B could get the better of Harriers Oli Hicks, who scored a hat trick, but Devlin Whitmore, Stuart Futrill and Neil Thompson pushed him to a fourth end. Whitmore and Futrill earned two wins each with their victories over Katie Hicks and Jamie Laughton with Katie Hicks earning a single, with her win over Neil Thompson, again in four ends 10-12, 10-12, 13-11, 7-11. The Hicks’ duo taking the doubles, again in four ends to earn the draw.
Stanwick VHTTC 1 v Chesterwell D 9
A reversal of fortune this week for Stanwick , on the receiving end of a 9-1 result. They were without their star players Geoff Neville and Kevin Tivey, as they faced a Chesterwell D side with Daniel Mann continuing his winning ways from last season. He was ably assisted by Jonathan Driscoll who also secured a hattrick. Duncan Wright dropping the single point against Stanwicks’ Carl Eaves but and was pushed to five ends against Al Hayes aand Jon Tuplin before winning out 11-5 and 11-4 respectively.
Wanderers E 10 v WDHA Knightriders 0
This was an expected result for the experienced Wanderers E side against the WDHA Knightriders, with two new signings in the ranks. Dave May, in his second match of the week was the only player to be extended, being taken to four ends by Anish Patel before winning 11-3, 11-7, 8-11, 11-4, with all the remaining singles and doubles won by Wanderers in three ends.
