Division 1 saw current champions Wiveliscombe travel to Shooting Stars. It was Wiveliscombe that started the match with their backs against the wall but quickly bounced back to leave quite an impression on the venue. It was David Woodland that led the way for the champions, scoring the only maximum for the evening to earn his player of the match award. Paul Nutkins scored an excellent 8 and Denis Buckingham a further 4 points. With a maximum 9 doubles points Wiveliscombe ended the match with 30 points. It was Geoff Williams’ £4.50 rubbers that more than earned their keep as he took 6 points from the top team. Robin Arkell added 4 and Martin Shoots 2 singles points. The doubles were hotly contested and Shooting Stars scored a valuable 5 points to take their final tally to 17.

Basement Dwellers entertained Gnomads and the home team just missed out on full points for the match. It was the bat of Vince Court that managed to wreak havoc and score the only maximum of the night, giving Vince the accolade of player of the match. There was excellent support from Mike Vickery with 8 and Paul Rees with 7 points. Full points in the doubles gave Basement Dwellers a final score of 33 points. Gnomads appeared somewhat overwhelmed in the singles apart from Martin Rant who scored all 7 of the team’s singles points. With a further 4 doubles points Gnomads returned home with a total of 11 points.

Minehead A turned in a solid performance at home against Stogumber. Joe Camp led the way with 8 points, closely followed by 7 from Toby Kerslake plus 3 points from Terry Cadman. The doubles points were shared equally with 6 points for each team. Minehead ended the match the winners with 24 points. It was Stogumber’s Martyn Summerell who was awarded player of the match, scoring the only maximum of the night. Dave Veale, as substitute, added a further 3 points and with their 6 doubles points Stogumber’s score for the evening was 18 points.

Division 2 saw a close match when Barn Boys played Drifters. No maximums were scored on the night and Steve Palmer top scored with 7 points and Andy Fay with 6 and Graham Lamacraft with 4 points for the home side. The match was won by Barn Boys on their doubles performance when they scored a full 9 points for a total score of 26. Drifters got the better of the singles points with David Smith being awarded player of the match for his 7 points. Andrew Miles-Fuller also scored 7 and Liz Fletcher added a fine 6 points. It was the lack of success in the doubles that allowed the finely balanced match to slip away from Drifters as they added only 2 doubles points and ending the evening with 22 points.

House Martyns faced a reinforced Roy’s Boys at home this week. It was Joe Burt that collected another player of the match award for the home team for his 8 singles points. Jack Lancaster played well for another 7 points. Curtis Beynon-Pearce was the doubles specialist and helped the House Martyns to a further 3 doubles points to take their total to 19 points for the match. Roy’s Boys put up a fierce battle and it was a fine debut for Di Garner, scoring an excellent 8 points. Barry and Roy Hooper added 6 & 5 singles points respectively. But it was the maximum score of 9 doubles points that sealed the match for the ‘Boys’ (and girl) with a final score of 28 points. The winning margin means that Roy’s Boys now lead House Martyns by a single point in the league table.
