Division 1 – This week we only have two matches to report. Firstly, Shooting Stars entertained division 1 hopefuls, Basement Dwellers. Whilst the final score may give the impression that the match was somewhat one-sided, this was far from the case as the home team battled hard for every point. Resistance was led by Geoff Williams who pressured each opponent in the singles to win 6 points. Further valuable points were added by Robin Arkell with 2 and Martin Shoots with 1. With another 4 doubles points this gave Shooting Stars a creditable score of 13 points against a full-strength Basement Dwellers team. For the visitors it was again Mike Vickery that won the player of the match award for his maximum. Vince Court also scored a maximum but this time without any bat twiddling. Paul Rees just missed his maximum with 8 points but had additional success on the night when he completed the daily crossword. With maximum doubles points, Basement Dwellers returned home with 35 points to maintain their momentum in the division 1 title race.

This year seems to be full of matches ending with identical team scores. Our second match this week proved to be yet another one when Minehead A travelled to White Horse. It was this year’s signing, David Bryant that was first out of the starting gate for White Horse. From the off he cantered to the only maximum of the evening and the player of the match award. Ian Rew whipped in some cracking shots as he scored an excellent 6 points. The visitors managed to reign in Jamie Robertson, but not before he added 3 points. The doubles were quite evenly contested, and 6 points scored, to give White Horse 24 points. Minehead A scored consistently throughout the match and Joe Camp just missed his maximum with 8 points with David Veale adding 5 and Terry Cadman a further 3. Minehead got the better of the doubles with 8 points to give an identical team score of 24 points. Throughout the match White Horse were neck and neck with Minehead, however, at the finish line it ended as a dead heat.
