Division 1– Gnomads entered their final match of the season with their sights set on finishing fourth or better in division 1 when they entertained current champions, Wiveliscombe. Martin Rant and Nigel Foster rose to the challenge as Martin scored 6 and Nigel added 3 singles points. With a further 2 doubles points it was ‘mission accomplished’ as their total of 11 points put Gnomads 2 points above House Martyns in the division 1 table, with all matches played. Wiveliscombe played their strongest team in order to maximise their score as their hopes of retaining the division 1 title seemed to be ebbing away. Player of the match, John Edbrooke, led the way with the only maximum of the match, and the home team having no answer to his pimples. David Woodland and Paul Nutkins scored 6 singles points apiece before Wiveliscombe closed out the doubles with maximum points. The final tally fell short of maximum points due in no small part to the excellent play of the home team combined with the occasional unforced error. Despite ending the week at the top of the table, the final match score of 30 points makes it look like ‘mission impossible’ for Wiveliscombe as they head for their next, and final, match against title challengers, Basement Dwellers.

Division 2– It was another all ‘Boys’ affair as Roy’s Boys challenged Barn Boys when they both played their penultimate matches of the season. Barry Hooper was awarded player of the match as both he and Roy Hooper scored maximum singles points. With 3 doubles points added this gave Roy’s Boys the narrowest of victories with 21 points, promoting them up the division 2 table and putting them in a strong position to end the season in second place. Barn Boys put up a good tussle with Steve Palmer scoring 6, and Graham Lamacraft and Andy Fay a further 3 singles points apiece. It was in the doubles that Barn Boys were at their best when they narrowly missed their maximum, with 8 points scored. The match result couldn’t have been any closer with Barn Boys ending the evening on 20 points.
