Division 1– Wiveliscombe continued their dash for points in their final matches of the season, in their bid to retain their division 1 title for the eighth successive year. This week they faced Shooting Stars. Player of the match was John Edbrooke who put his pimples to good use as he flipped his way to his maximum. David Woodland also completed his maximum whilst the ambidextrous Denis Buckingham had to grind out three five-set singles games for his 7 points. An unopposed doubles maximum gave Wiveliscombe a final score of 34 points and elevated them to second place in division 1. This leaves them everything to play for in their final two matches. This was the final match of the season for Shooting Stars who put up a valiant fight throughout the evening. Martin Shoots and Geoff Williams each scored 3 singles points and Robin Arkell added a further 2. Numerous other games went the full distance, or to deuce, before the home team prevailed. Shooting Stars ended the match with 8 points which secures them more division 1 action next season.

Division 2 – It was another game of ‘lads vs the boys’ when Hawks took on Roy’s Boys for the second time in two weeks. Captain Mark Scyner led the way for Hawks with 6 singles points. Brothers, Alfie and Nathaniel Southam, provided excellent support in the doubles and helped to add 6 further points. Final score for Hawks: 12 points. It was a welcome return for Roy’s Boys’ Barry Hooper as he scored his maximum for the player of the match award. Diana Garner also scored an excellent maximum. Roy Hooper only just missed his, scoring 7 singles points. The doubles were equally contested, and the 6 points scored gave Roy’s Boys a total of 31 points at the end of the evening.

The semi-finals of the knockout cup were completed this week.

Allsorts never quite got their game going and only Mike Lawrie could manage a gain of 7 points during the match. Drifters’ kept the pressure on all night and Liz Fletcher gained 8 points. The deciding factor was Mike Pretty and his new bat which earned him a gain of 22 points. This gave the victory to Drifters by 27 points, and a place in the final.

The second semi-final saw House Martyns take on Basement Dwellers, who were playing only two-handed on the evening. There were some epic battles against the visitors by all three home team players – Jack Lancaster, Scott Milton and Geoff Williams, with a net gain of 2 being recorded by Geoff Williams. Basement Dwellers’ gains of 20 points apiece from Vince Court and Paul Rees were insufficient to secure a win, giving the victory to House Martyns.

The final will be played at the Lawns on Thursday 4thApril at 7pm.
