2nd Division
Minehead Breakaways v Allsorts          19 - 27

Division 1 – No matches played

Division 2 – Before all table tennis was suspended by the West Somerset Table Tennis Association the final match to complete the league season for division 2 had been played. Current division 2 leaders Minehead Breakaways were the home favourites when they played third placed Allsorts. The task was simple and even a minor loss would clinch the championship for Breakaways.

Throughout the match the teams were neck and neck with the lead swapping between them. The home team played steadily but were constantly finding their scoring ability was being restricted. Andy Berry and David Veale each scored 6 and Trevor Short 5 singles points. Breakaways were however facing the team that has the best doubles scoring record this season and this was reflected in only 2 doubles points being scored.

The scorecard was added up and Minehead Breakaways ended the match with 19 points and a nervous wait for their opponent’s score to be totted up. Allsorts settled down to the task in hand as they took the first two games. It was the ambidextrous Sifa Vea who was the star of the show with the only maximum of the evening who received the player of the match award. Mike Lawrie put in a solid performance with 6 and Barbara Parker left it to her last game to find top form to beat Andy Berry for her 3 valuable singles points. Allsorts continued with their winning doubles form to score maximum points.

When their score was tallied Allsorts had taken a shock victory with 27 points. It was now that things became interesting as both teams had tied for points at the top of the division 2 table. The league title would be decided on the number of games scored against each team. The league statistics showed that Minehead Breakaways had 214 games scored against them whilst Allsorts had only 210 games scored against them. By losing fewer games this means that Allsorts are the new division 2 champions!!!! What a nail-biting finish to a close-fought season and hearty congratulations go to Allsorts.

In view of the current situation with the Coronavirus outbreak all table tennis has been stopped until further notice. Once the all clear is given and table tennis can restart then the outstanding matches in division 1 will be played to determine the champions of that division. The postponed junior tournament will then be held, and the final of the handicap knockout cup will be played. We will eventually hold our finals night and presentation evening to celebrate the end of this season.

At the present time we have no idea when this will be, but we will keep everybody informed. In the meantime, there will be no table tennis and the West Somerset Table Tennis Association sends its best wishes to its members and supporters and hopes everybody will take care and stay safe.
