Division 1

Roy’s Boys got their season underway this week when they hosted current division 1 leaders, Gnomads. The home team made good progress from the outset, with Barry Hooper top-scoring with 7 points. Di Garner never quite managed to get the maximum performance out of her pimples but added a valuable 4, with Roy Hooper adding the final 3 singles points. John Garner was making his team debut as doubles specialist for the evening and helped the hosts gain a further 3 doubles points. With a total of 17 points for Roy’s Boys, the evening proved to be a good start to this year’s campaign.

Gnomads scored freely all evening despite the strong opposition. Both Martin Rant and Nigel Foster scored maximums in the singles, with Martin receiving the player of the match award. Steve Wells added the final 3 singles points before Gnomads went on to maximum points in the doubles. With 30 points for the match, Gnomads remain flying high at the top of the table.

Shooting Stars faced a tough match against last season’s top team, Basement Dwellers. The home team started the match in bottom gear, and never troubled the gearbox for the rest of the evening as they ground out the odd set here and there. Geoff Williams managed to top-score with 5 singles points, with Robin Arkell adding 2 and birthday boy, Martin Shoots, adding the final singles point. There was modest success in the doubles with a further 3 points, giving Shooting Stars a final tally of 11 points.

Basement Dwellers were in top gear from the start with Vince Court and Mike Vickery both scoring maximums. Vince was awarded the player of the match award as he mastered his challenging bat this week. A solid 6 singles points from Paul Reese then led to a maximum for the visitors in the doubles. With 33 points in the bag, Basement Dwellers were able to reflect on an excellent result whilst waiting for the A39 to re-open for their journey home.
