Division 1
Gnomads entertained Shooting Stars in a hard-fought match. Throughout the evening the number of points won from the net, and edges, meant that many sets could have been won by either player. In one set alone there were at least five points scored in this manner. That said, the match was played in a very friendly and good-humoured way throughout.
For Gnomads, Martin Rant performed a captain’s role, with his maximum earning him the player of the match award. Derek Mayall’s experience saw him work hard for his 8 points, with Nigel Foster adding an excellent 7 singles points. The doubles proved little trouble for the home team and, with 8 points scored, Gnomads ended the evening with 32 points, placing them at the top of the division 1 table.
Shooting Stars started the evening in promising fashion before again tailing off as the match progressed. In the singles, Geoff Williams led the way with 6 points, followed by Martin Shoots with 4 and Robin Arkell with 1 point. In the doubles Shooting Stars edged their way to winning one game for their 3 points, giving a final match score of 14 for the evening. This was sufficient to lift Shooting Stars off the foot of the table.
