Shooting Stars faced a tough match at home this week against last year’s champions, Basement Dwellers. The home team were consistent throughout but their lack of match play meant that many close-fought sets slipped out of their grasp. In the singles Martin Shoots led the way with 5 points, whilst recording the longest rally of the evening. Geoff Williams scored 4 and Robin Arkel added the final 3 points. There was a degree of success in the doubles with 5 points added. At the end of the evening Shooting Stars had a creditable 17 points for their efforts.

Basement Dwellers pressed hard all evening, despite the stubborn opposition. Vince Court scored a maximum, but it was the hard hitting Toby Kerslake who won the player of the match award, smashing his way to another maximum. The final 2 singles points were added by Kerry Manicom, who shared in the longest rally of the evening. With 8 doubles points, Basement Dwellers’ score ended at 28 points, keeping them in second place in the league table.

Last Chance Saloon piled on the pressure when they entertained Drifters. For the home team it was maximum points all round for Curtis King, Paul Rees and the ambidextrous Sifa Vea, with Sifa being awarded player of the match. With a maximum in the doubles, it was a Grand Slam 36 points for Last Chance Saloon, helping their averages and improving their league position.

Drifters put on a brave performance in the face of strong opponents but struggled to win sets. The 2 singles points were won by Andrew Miles, with his pimple bat. 2 doubles points were won again by Andrew, in partnership with Dave Smith. Drifters ended the evening with 4 points – sufficient to keep them above the foot of the league table.
