Last week saw only one match played when Wiveliscombe were challenged by high flying Gnomads. As expected, this was a hard-fought match. John Edbrooke led the way for Wiveliscombe but narrowly missed a maximum, scoring an excellent 8. Paul Nutkin added 5, and Ben Cooper battled hard for 5 singles points. The doubles saw close play, but Wiveliscombe prevailed with 8, giving them a match total of 27.

For the visitors, it was Martin Rant who scored the only maximum of the evening to receive the player of the match award. Nigel Foster scored 3, and the final singles point was added by Dave O’Connell. In the doubles Gnomads added 5, to take their final tally for the evening to 18 to keep the pressure on the top of the table.

This week saw an intriguing match with Gnomads in action against last year’s champions, Basement Dwellers. The home team were determined to give a good account for themselves and Martin Rant led the way with an unopposed maximum, receiving the award of player of the match. Derek Mayall added an excellent 6, with the last singles point being scored by Nigel Foster. There was only modest success in the doubles but, with 3 scored, the final tally for Gnomads rose to 19 points.

Basement Dwellers did not hit top form with Mike Vickery and, the hard hitting, Toby Kerslake each scoring 6. Vince Court struggled to find his singles form and was restricted to 3 singles points. There was more success in the doubles, with 8 points scored. This was sufficient to give Basement Dwellers a narrow victory with 23 points.

It was heavy going for White Horse when they paid a visit to Last Chance Saloon. The home team kept a tight reign of their visitors throughout the evening. For Last Chance Saloon Paul Rees won the player of the match award for his maximum. There was a further maximum from Curtis King, and an excellent 8 singles points from the ambidextrous Sifa Vea. With another maximum in the doubles, Last Chance Saloon romped home the winners with 35 points.

White Horse never got into their stride but Ian Rew scored 3 and Andy Godfrey 2 in the singles. They teamed up in the doubles to glean one final point to give White Horse a final score of 6 for the evening.

Shooting Stars entertained Drifters and played their most productive match since they formed. In the singles it was maximums all the way for Geoff Williams, Martin Shoots and Robin Arkell, with Geoff receiving the player of the match award. In the doubles, another maximum gave Shooting Stars a Grand Slam total of 36 points. The score however does not reflect the intensity of this match, and how hard a battle it was.

Drifters kept up a continuous pressure – right to the last set of the evening. Liz Fletcher, Andrew Miles and Dave Smith each scored 2 singles points – despite losing many sets by the minimum margin. With 4 points scored in the doubles, Drifters ended the evening with a well-deserved 10 points.
