Division 1

Both matches this week were between White Horse and Wiveliscombe as each team seeks to clear their backlog of matches. White Horse are firmly rooted to the foot of the first division for the remainder of this season. Wiveliscombe have an opportunity to maximise their points tally from their remaining games as they contest the runner-up spot.

White Horse hosted the first match without their lead player, who had sustained a recent sporting injury. Ian Rew played well for his 3 hard-earned points. Ben Cooper was substitute for the evening and he too added a further 3 singles points. Ian and Ben teamed up in the doubles to glean one final point to give White Horse a total of 7.

Wiveliscombe scored a grand slam, with maximum points all round for John Edbrooke, Paul Nutkins and David Woodland. Player of the match was awarded to David Woodland for his unopposed singles maximum. Wiveliscombe scored the full 36 points for their evening’s work.

The return leg between Wiveliscombe and White Horse turned out to be quite a battle. This time Ben Cooper was playing for his home side so Geoff Williams was called up by the visitors as substitute for the injured David Bryant. For Wiveliscombe it was Paul Nutkins who turned in the performance of the evening. His maximum earning him the player of the match award. Paul had to work hard for his wins and secured his last point after a five-set thriller. Paul also participated in a deuce game against Ian Rew that ended with a score of 20 – 22 which was quite fitting when one considers the date. In this set it was Ian that prevailed. Ben Cooper just missed his maximum, with 8, and David Woodland completed the singles scoring with a hard-earned 7 points. Although Wiveliscombe had a clean sweep in the doubles there were many sets where the result could have gone either way. Final tally for Wiveliscombe was 33 points which raises them to the top of the table, but with more games played than their rivals.

White Horse were determined to fight hard all evening. It was substitute Geoff Williams who set the pace and just missed his maximum after a 5-set tussle with Paul Nutkins. The final set was the decider between the two. The remaining 2 singles points were added by Ian Rew, including the marathon deuce game, but the points tally does not reflect the quality of the table tennis played. Mention must be made for the tenacity of Jamie Robertson who was so close to adding to the score line in both the singles and doubles. At the end of the match White Horse had 10 points, leaving them at the foot of the table.
