Division 1

It was a case of ‘over the hill’ for Shooting Stars as they journeyed to take on division 1 challengers, Wiveliscombe. The home team players were the on-form John Edbrooke, David Woodland and Paul Nutkins. There were maximums for all, including in the doubles, with John Edbrooke receiving the player of the match award for his unopposed maximum. The grand slam score of 36 points has given fresh impetus to Wiveliscombe in the leadership race.

Although the score line for Shooting Stars looks somewhat like a damp squib, there were in fact some fireworks during many of the sets. Geoff Williams gained 2 singles points but lost a further 5 sets by the minimum two points, including a couple of deuce sets. With a little more finesse, the score line would have looked much healthier. Robin Arkell added one further singles point before joining forces with Geoff Williams to salvage a solitary doubles point. With a grand total of 4, Shooting Stars remain just above the relegation zone.

There was an excellent top-of-the-table battle when Basement Dwellers entertained House Martyns. Throughout the match the lead kept changing hands, although neither team gained a significant advantage. For the home team, both the hard-hitting Toby Kerslake and Mike Vickery scored 6 points apiece, with the final 3 being added by Paul Reese. The strong point of their game was found to be in the doubles, with 8 scored. The final tally for Basement Dwellers was a narrow victory with 23 points.

House Martyns needed to play well to maintain their challenge in division 1. Curtis King led the way with a maximum for the player of the match award. This will certainly improve Curtis’s averages. The remainder of the singles points were added by Scott Milton with an excellent 8. Matt Lawrence helped score 4 doubles points for the visitors, meaning that House Martyns ended the evening with 21 points. The match elevated both teams above Gnomads, leaving the top of the division wide open, with the second half of the season well and truly under way.

Division 2

Junior based Hawks faced a tough home match against Allsorts this week, with the visitors on good form. For the home side, team captain Mark Scyner won the player of the match award for the only maximum of the evening. With the remaining 2 singles points scored by Alfie Southam, Hawkes put up a good fight but were unable to add any sets from the doubles, giving them a total score of 11 points.

Allsorts scored consistently throughout the match led by Steve Palmer with 7, plus Mike Lawrie and the ambidextrous Sifa Vea with 6 singles points apiece. With an unopposed maximum in the doubles, Allsorts had a comfortable victory with 28 points.

There was a much closer match when Drifters hosted Minehead Breakaways. Both teams played steadily, and Drifters’ Liz Fletcher and Andrew Miles scored 6 points each. David Smith was restricted to 3 singles points, but the home side went on to gain maximum doubles points. This gave Drifters a narrow victory with 24 points.

Andrew Berry from Minehead Breakaways was the singles star of the evening where his maximum earned him the player of the match award. Kerry Manicom scored an excellent 6, with David Veale adding the final 2 singles points. With 4 doubles points, Minehead Breakaways fell slightly short of their opponents’ total. With a tally of 21 points Breakaways remain at the top of the division 2 table.
