Division 2

The West Somerset Table Tennis League resumed this week with two division 2 matches. Drifters entertained the current leaders, Minehead Breakaways. The home team played steadily, but their opponents always had the upper hand throughout the evening. Liz Fletcher headed the scoring for Drifters with 6 and was supported by Andrew Miles with 5 and David Smith with 4 singles points. The doubles play added a further 4 to give Drifters a final total of 19 points.

Breakaways gradually extended their advantage as the match progressed. The star of the evening was Kerry Manicom, who’s maximum earned her the player of the match award. Andy Berry added a further 7, with Arnould Guilliard adding a solid 5 singles points. The visitors also sustained their advantage in the doubles, with 7 points scored. The final score for Breakaways was 28 to seal a comfortable victory.

This year’s Division 2 favourites, Allsorts, challenged the junior-based Hawks. The home team were on form as they powered their way up the league table. The ambidextrous Sifa Vea was awarded player of the match for his unopposed maximum. Liz Fletcher was a substitute player for the evening, and Liz also attained a maximum. The singles points were concluded by Steve Palmer with an excellent 7. With maximum doubles points Allsorts ended the match with 34 points.

Hawks were without their captain this week, so the junior players, Alfie and Nathaniel Southam, had to raise their game as they faced such strong opposition. At short notice Crispin Barber joined the team, making his league debut. In the singles, Alfie scored 4 and Nathaniel 3 points. Two doubles points were added to give Hawks a final tally of 9 points. It must be said that the final score did not reflect the quality of the play from Alfie and Nathaniel, but it was always going to be a difficult match against such strong opposition. It does indicate that both players are continuing to develop as the season progresses.
