Shooting Stars finally got their season underway when they visited Allsorts. There was nothing between the teams in singles play. For the home team the singles points were scored by Andy Berry, who led the way with 7, substitute mark Scyner adding 6, and Matt Lawrence 5. With a maximum in the doubles, Allsorts accumulated a winning score of 27 points. Throughout the match there was much quality and entertaining table tennis played, with many sets going the distance.

For Shooting Stars, Geoff Williams scored the only maximum of the evening for the player of the match award. The remaining single points were scored by Martin Shoots with 5, and Robin Arkel, 4. With a disappointing 2 doubles points proving to be the deciding factor in the match, Shooting Stars ended the evening with a final score of 20.

 

Last season’s champions, Basement Dwellers, entertained White Horse. The home team soon asserted their dominance with maximums from both Vince Court and the hard-hitting Toby Kerslake, with Toby being awarded player of the match. The remaining singles points were added by Kerry Manicom with 4. A maximum in the doubles saw Basement Dwellers reign in their opponents with a total of 31 points.

White Horse never quite got into their stride but David Bryand did start finding his form, and top-scored with 5 singles points. Ian Rew added 4 and Andy Godfrey the final 3. With only 1 doubles point, White Horse passed the finishing post with a total of 13.

 

Wiveliscombe put on a dazzling performance when they called time on Last Chance Saloon. It was maximums all the way for John Edbrooke, Paul Nutkins and Ben Cooper. Player of the match was awarded to Paul. Their success continued in the doubles with another maximum to give Wiveliscombe a Grand Slam score of 36 points.

Last Chance Saloon were dominated throughout the evening. Paul Rees was the top performer with 2 singles points. The ambidextrous Sifa Vea, and captain Curtis King gleaned one further point apiece. There was modest success in the doubles, with 3 points added. The final tally for Last Chance Saloon ended at 7 for the evening.

 

Junior team, Hawks, faced a tough match at home against current league leaders, Gnomads. The visitors were on form and pressed their advantage throughout the match. In the singles, Martin Rant and Nigel Foster each scored maximums, with Martin receiving the player of the match award. David O’Connell added an excellent 8 points. With a maximum from the doubles Gnomads ended the evening with 35 points, keeping them at the top of the league table.

Junior team, Hawks, put up a spirited fight led by captain Mark Scyner with 5 points. The remaining singles points were scored by Alfie Southam with 4. One final doubles point gave Hawks a final score of 10 for their hard work.
