Basement Dwellers commenced their season by entertaining Drifters in what was always going to be a tough match for the visitors. The home team were division 1 champions last season and started their campaign in impressive style with a grand slam maximum points. Vince Court, Kerry Manicom and Toby Kerslake all scored maximums in the singles, with the hard hitting Toby receiving the player of the match award. With full points from the doubles, Basement Dwellers ended the evening with 36 points.
Drifters put up a spirited performance in a match that was competed in good spirit. Liz Fletcher led the way with 2 points. Andrew Miles scored 1 and this included the best shot the evening when returning a smash with a powerful block that was unplayable by his opponent. Crispin Barbour scored his first league point, with many other of his sets that were missed by the narrowest of margins. Although there was no success in the doubles, Drifters tally reached 4 for their hard work.
Gnomads were at home this week to, near neighbours, White Horse. This season’s strong start for the home team continued. Team captain, Martin Rant, was awarded player of the match for his unopposed maximum. Nigel Foster also scored a maximum, and Dave O’Connell completed the singles scoring with an excellent 8 points. With a maximum in the doubles Gnomads accumulated 35 points by the end of the match, placing them at the head of the field.
White Horse made modest progress in the heavy going, with David Bryant and Ian Rew scoring 4 singles points apiece. Andy Godfrey passed the finishing post with another 2 points. With one doubles point added, the total score for White Horse came to 11 points, leaving them in a stable mid-table position.
It was a welcome return for Roy’s Boys after a season away from the league. Their task was somewhat daunting as they played their first match away to perennial league champions, Wiveliscombe. The home team were relentless in their play with the player of the match award going to John Edbrooke for his unopposed maximum. Paul Nutkins also scored a maximum and Ben Cooper completed the singles scoring with an excellent 7 points. With maximum points from the doubles, Wiveliscombe ended the match with 34 points, leaving them a single point below the current league leaders.
Roy’s Boys’ three players, Roy, Barry and Peggy Hooper, put up a spirited performance but the only success for the team came with the 4 singles points from Barry.
